G6 gauge cluster
Tuesday, March 20, 2007 4:56 PM
I am looking to do a gauge swap into my 04 'fire. I found a G6 cluster but the connector is different. I can make an adapter from existing parts of both cars, but i am wondering if anyone else has done this and if so, how. The dash will have to be modified and the mounting points drilled, but other than that, is this feasable?

I'm considering modifying a grand am gauge cluster in my cav. I need to find out how different the wiring is between the two, depending on what engine the G6 has you may have to do the same, but I can't say that's a definite.

I would try to get the cluster working before modding the dash to fit it. There may me more electronic issues than you think. Once you get it working, start hacking the dash up to make it fit.

IS there any websites on the net where i can look up the diagram for this cluster? Also what would i need to look for as far as getting the cluster to work? I went back to the salvage yard and the cluster was gone, but i think i can get another. If not what other swaps would look good and still match my interior (red, of course.)?

Good luck with the diagrams. I haven't find any sites that offer diagrams to download. You'll more than likely have to go buy a manual for it or find someone who owns one that can loan you their manual. As far as other clusters, maybe look into the cobalt or G5, not sure how different they are from the G6. Since you have red interior, the G5 would probably be better since the gauges are red just my opinion, that's why I like mine. Here's what I'm looking to put in, not the entire dash, just the cluster area.

That cluster would look absolutely tits in my car, but i don't know about the fitment around the upper portion of the dash above the gauges. I am assuming these are out of a G5, correct? How would one go about getting them to fit with the upper dash? What about a Trans Am cluster? I am assuming that there would be connection concern with any other cluster, but what about connecting the pins from my dash (the 04) to a cluster piece from another 04 cluster then to the two connectors from a G6 (both the male and female) making a adapt-a-cord of sorts.

That's the grand am cluster. I'm gonna mold those humps around the cluster into my stock dash then vinyl over it.

Here's are a couple of the one from my G5

ME LIKEY! How would the G5 fit? Close (use a dremel) or not (use a sawzall)?

I'd have to look at both of them up close and compare. It'd probably be close, nowhere near as much fab as the grand am I'm wanting to do. I think I have some other shots of it I'll see if I can find them and post them for you. Maybe it'll give you a better idea of fitment.

I don't know if these will help but here's a couple more pics of my G5's dash and gauges and it's got the 2.2 eco so the wiring I'm guessing should hook right up to your 04

No, the plastic isn't there anymore lol

The height of the gauges is the only part that concerns me. Those gauges are kinda tall and i am not sure if i can make them fit into the smallish hole in my dash. I am not really willing to hack away a huge portion of the dash just to get it in but i will cut a little if i have to. Another question, will my milage transfer or will it need to be reset in the gauge cluster itself? I'm a real noob when it comes to stuff like this and the more i can learn, the better.

Well modification to the dash will be necessary. Might be able to get by with just cutting the top section of your sunfire dash out, just enough to allow the g5 gauges to fit, then make a mold and glass that section to cover it. I believe with the 04's the mileage is stored in the bcm not your cluster so it should transfer right over. I'm still a noob at this stuff too, just trying to remember and repeat what I've read in other posts, hope I'm not feeding you wrong info.

the G6 cluster will has alot of features that your car does not. it will have that info screen that displays mileage, oil life, and all those fun things. plus the trip is a button on the steering wheel which would have to be included in the swap.

a cobalt trip button might work better, its on the dash, so you would not have to try and get the wheel mounted one in your car.

The G5's got the same features. One of the buttons on the steering wheel toggles through the menu, another to reset some info ( trip, mpg...etc. ) I especially like the "ICE POSSIBLE" alert that's displayed when the car's thermostat gets down to a certain temperature
