Help with sound/rattle problems
Saturday, April 14, 2007 4:47 PM
Been a few years since I posted... starting to get back into my car again but a few things annoy me. My dash and ceiling rattle a little and it's starting to get on my nerves. I decided to buy some rubber washers today and I also plan to get some sound deadening material to put in my car while I'm at it. I don't have a sound system so spending all that money on Dynamat seems like overkill. I just want something to stop the rattles maybe make it a little more quiet inside.

Does anyone have any suggestions for companies? So far I found B-Quiet which seems a little bit cheaper. I thought about getting the 50 foot roll and splitting it between me and a friend but how much is enough? If I wanted to do the dash, ceiling, doors and maybe the back? They sell a 12 foot kit which I think I could get away with but would it be smarter to get 25 feet (other 25 going to friend)?

Little history:
I took my car into the dealer before and complained twice about the rattle. They said the main problem was the ceiling and they put some foam in there but the manager made them take it due to fire hazard. I think these materials would be better than just pure foam.

Thanks for the help.

I hate rattles as much as you, been trying to get of them since the day I bought the car. Most of mine are where plastic meets something, such as other plastic and metal. Try spray on undercoating. Any parts store will sell it with the spray paints. It goes on thick and leaves a rubber like coating on everything it touches. Plus, it's cheap (less than $5 a can). I had the same problem with my doors due to plastic on metal contact. Only problem is now I can hear the window components rattle when I shut the door and over bad bumps.

****BE WARNED***

If you use this stuff remember to properly prep the areas. This stuff is sticky, makes a huge mess and will get onto everything not taped or covered.

Thinner will clean it off, but possesses special hazards of it's own. Don't use MEK ([i]VERY toxic and will eat your paint!)

For the doors my 3"s rattled to all hell because there too small,so I made cardboard adapters for the front and rear speakers to rest on,not only did it stop the rattles but it made it a little louder.
I have seen people use mouse pads behind the tag and in between the dash and windshield.

However the mouse pad trick does NOT work when you have two 15s,12s,&4 10s.
it did well work when I only had the 10s in.( my lincoln)

I'm planning on getting fatmat for my sound deadener. I've heard good things from several people.

Wow, someone brought this up from death I ended up getting the 50 foot b-quiet one. Going to split 25 feet with a friend and probably sell the extra. Going to hopefully install it this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes. The rattling problem is very random in that sometimes it's fine and other times it feels like I'm driving something where my interior is about to just fall apart. I know it's weather related but it's so random.. it tends to do it when it 40 or below and 80 or above a lot. Been about 60 here and it's been better for some reason.

I hope you dont plan on using 25 Sq.Ft. for thw whole car. cause your gonna need WAY more than that. i used 100 sq.ft. on my car and that was barely just enough.

As far as sound deadening goes. go to Elemental Designs. order 100 square feet. we get a 20% discount there. and i loved the stuff. once it sticks on it dont come off. i think itss 100 bucks shipped. when i ordered at least. check them out. they have different grades. i got eDead V1

Well too late now I did go cheap since I won't be installing a sound system ever again. Had one for about 5 months in my truck and it got jacked, even though you couldn't hear it outside the truck... I'm mostly doing this to drop the rattle noise and hope for better sounding speakers as a bonus. I won't be doing the floor...I know I definitely won't have enough for that. I'm thinking I'll load up in doors, 1 layer on dash, toss something on the roof and call it good. I doubt I'll have a lot of extra, if any, but I think 25 feet will be enough for me.

it takes 12 sq. ft to do just your doors. so your not gonna get ANY on the dash OR the roof. so you wont have ANY left
