Interior swap

Hey guys, I am back again (even though I bet no one remembers me). I have a 2001 Cavalier as my DD and its a great car. I have a 90 Talon TSI AWD as well, but it spun a bearing and I cant afford to fix it anymore so its getting parted. I hate to part with my baby, but if I gotta I am going to have some fun with the profits. Thats where the Cavalier comes in.

Its my first car and I have been driving it for over four years now, which is fine, its a great car. The only problem is its so boring to drive all the time, thats why I got the Talon. Well, now that its leaving, I decided to make the Cavalier a bit more exciting. When I first got it, the speakers were all blown and the CD player wasnt working great. I upgraded, but I had a lot of trouble in doing so and I got lazy and didnt do it right. It works, but its just not done professionally. The intior is tan and I hate it. Its gotten some extra wear and tear from normal teenage use and I am a bit embarrassed at times especially when I give a girl a ride.

Well, in an attempt to make the car more fun, I am going to ditch the current half broke aftermarket deck, the front speakers, and get a new sub/amp combo. I have no problem with the electronics or hooking them up, since @!#$ my car up a bit I have done a few other peoples cars in a professional manner. If I am going to do this, I am just going to do it right and strip the interior to rerun the wires, clean up some of my shoddy wiring practices, and secure the new head unit better. Well, I once came very close to doing a black interior swap, I didnt mostly because the winter was coming and I didnt have time. Well, since I am going to rip it all out anyway, its scuffed up in spots, and I dont like it, I am contemplating doing a black interior swap.

As stated abive, its a 2001 Cavalier, 2 door and it has the standard no tach guage cluster. So here comes the questions. Would the interior from a 95-99 work in the 01? What about different trim levels, will a Z24's @!#$ work in my standard Cavy? I want this to be an not involved as I can, but if I can only get ahold of say a 98 2dr with black interior I would be willing to do it. Has anyone done this that could provide me some tips? I know its going to be a long and rather involved project but I am not new to working on cars and if I take my time and do it right theres no reason I cant get it done.

Also, before any of anyone goes on any "@!#$ the newbie" crusade, I did search for a good hour and some change with no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated guys, thanks.

As far as I know you would have no problem swapping to the 98 dash. You would just have to get all the pieces. I can't say for certain if the 00+ cluster would work in the older dash though. I think it would, but then I ripped out a 98 dash last weekend and it seemed like the mounting was different.

Yeah I was right. The 00+ cluster won't fit in the pre 00 dash. Without modding the mounting points.

As far as trim packages the J body is the same Z-24,cavi, sunfire...so I see no reason Z24 parts wouldn't fit. You just need to make sure you get all the appropriate pieces. Trim just screws or clips on. Your getting the trim from the same donor car so it should be no issue

You won't be able to use the cluster from the older car in your 2001 though without modifying some harnesses....I am pretty sure you need to swap the BCM.....and i THINK that would involve re-wiring your entire car.....but then i could be wrong on that one

^^^you would need to modify the back of the bezel to fit the cluster. not swap all together.

but my questions is, why would you want to go to the 95-99 dash? that seems sounter-productive IMO.

i think the 00-05 dash is much nicer than the older style
