Ok, i saw writeup on painting dash on here.. but it didnt seem to answer my ?S, so i figured id ask you guys, the type of paint he used was this...
My ? is.. the dash is vynal.. i tried to use duplicolor dye, i used a whole can (4 coats) and it completely faded through within maybe 2-3 weeks... will this work on vynal?? and will i need to prime or sand if i want to keep the texture of it? if i do have to sand and primer, is it pretty easy? thanks in advance, hop you guys can help me..

when i did my dash i didnt sand it i just cleaned it really well and sprayed with the dupli color about 6 coats, plenty of dryin time inbetween then a good couple coats of clear and that was 3 years ago and it has not faded at all to this day. as far as i know you dont sand the top dash because it is that soft vinyl with the soft stuff under it.
"sometimes the respect is more important..."
hmm... do you think that paint would work? or could you stick with the dye?? and i didnt even know they made clear coat in the dye stuff lol... but of coarse i got it @ wal-mart, and the walmart here doesnt have S*** .. if they do, ill try autozone or sumthin...

Misinformation. You didn't sand and paint your dash top, it's vinyl. You sanded and painted plastic.
Terminology is important when you're communicating via a text-only medium.
A dye process is the only way to properly recolour the dash top. If you want to paint it, you have to resurface your dash. This is usually done through a long process of fiberglassing, etc.
With that said, if you want to use paint on your vinyl dash, go for it David. But when it becomes a giant piece of flypaper, I reserve the right to say "I told you so."

worded perfectly!!
here is a question.. i got a ass load of carpet and vinyl spray paint left over from my talon i had.. that should do the dashtop fine right? it worked ok in my talon if i remember right...
^^^yup
yea, thats what i used, it was duplicolor vynal and carpet paint, put like 3-4 coats on which was the can, and its already fadded through in spots... would it help if i out clear coat on it? if so, do they make clear coat for vynal stuff? thanks
"Hondas are like tampons, every pussy has one!!!"
How much would you use? and did you use a clear coat?? thanks
"Hondas are like tampons, every pussy has one!!!"
please exuse my language (just got back from working on my car).. so i went and got some more dupli color vynal paint today, did bout 6 coats on top of the 3 already on it, then about 6 hours later, put the dash back in... the paints gone, almost all of it scratched off when i put it in... they dont sell clear coat in vynal paint... what clear coat could i use? should it be ok as long as its the same base of paint?(enamal, acrylic, ect.) ... and i think im going to just leave the dash in the car to paint it this time.. do you think that will be ok too? thanks
"Hondas are like tampons, every pussy has one!!!"
u wont be able to get far enough away to paint inside the car.. be gentle putting it in and u should be fine.. think of ur dash pad as a newborn you wouldn't lob it into the child seat.. don't lob "your baby" in the car ^_^ as from expirence clear on the vinyl paint works out ok.. but leaves a gloss finish don't look stock.. which mainly is the point of ppl using the vinyl instead of glass primer and then paint and clear.. at least Imo. i am still a newb to this stuff so i could be dead ass wrong
hmm... i think there should be enough room... i painted mt steering wheel inside it.. and it turned out fine... and the way that dash is.. its a bitch puttin it back in.. theres almost no way you wont tear it up lol.. and i want it to look more show like anyway, so itll be better with base and clear on it.. do you think it should be ok if i just use like that truck and SUV paint (^^^^^) for my clear on top of my base coat as long as the paints are the same base?
"Hondas are like tampons, every pussy has one!!!"
it honestly should be fine.. i would just be nervous bombin in my car.. to mays places to get overspray :X
Wont be too much of a problem for me though... heres a pic of whats left of my interior ...
the back seats and everything are also ripped out.. ill tape off the windsheild as much as i can, and use a razor blade like i did the other times with the steering wheel to get any off that might have got on it.. i think it should work.. maybe lol... Alot of people have told me it will crack and flake and stuff if i dont use primer too... so i dont know what all im going to have to do.. bout to just blow the @!#$in thing up!!!!
"Hondas are like tampons, every pussy has one!!!"
if u used the paint for the vinyl u should eb fine without primer... liek i said alot of what i knwo is hear say so best is to do and learn..
Well, i took the dash out AGAIN!!! to make sure i got it right this time... i bought a can of the primer (^^^) and 2 cans of the duplicolor vynal paint, and a can of clear coat (^^^^) i figure about 5 coats of primer, 12 coats of base coat, and 5 coats of clear coat, i think that should do it... if this doesnt work, im ripping the vynal off and fiberglassing it... anyone know how t do berglassing and how easy it is to do?? never done it before.. as far as i know.. you use bondo to form it.. then you use fiberglass resin over that i think... not sure.. if someone could explain to me how to fiberglass it, it would be a big help!!!... thanks in advance for your help

^^^NEVER use filler first. you will have to lay a couple layers of fiberglass, then fill. filler shouldnt be used very thick either. it is only there to help blend high/low spots.
i would try a smaller project of glassing firts before you try and tackle the dash. its a pretty big/complicated job for a first try!
do not try and glass your dash if you have no idea on how to glass. also do not use bondo brand filler. to fiberglass your dash you need to drill alot of little holes all around the dash to make sure the resin seeps through and cures to the dash. also you have to do a thin layer first and then test fit it and make sure it didnt warp. if it warps it wont fit back in obviously. also if you dont had enough glass to the dash to make up for the thickness of the vinyl then you'll have gaps every where.
This is going to be hard to explain if you dont have any fiberglass experience and I would strongly recommend what Joey said about doing a smaller project first. But heres basically how to do it.
If you want to fiberglass your dash your going to have to take it out of the car tear the vinyl off drill alot of small holes in it. Then lay resin on it when it hits the "green" stage put it back into the car and let the resin fully cure. If you leave the dash out of the car it will warp on you. After the dash resin has cured put another coat on same process basically. Once you put your last coast of resin on to the dash let it cure sand it down then use filler on the high/low spots of the dash sand it down primer and paint then clear. and your dash is offically glassed. Word of warning glare will be a Bish when driving.
Did you miss the STICKY at the top of the page which gives you basic fiberglassing instructions?
Since you are doing your dash, you will not follow those exacly, but you can use them as a guide. Like the others said, you will basically tear the vinyl off and drill a bunch of small holes. Then apply the resin to both sides so it will adhere to itself. This will replace the cloth in the tutorial.
And I agree with others. Try doing some smaller work before doing your dash. It is a lot of work, and there are many places for errors.
Wide Body Progress
if you can't get the hang of painting vynal. fiberglassing is going to be way to difficult.
when you repainted your dash did you clean off all the old paint. when paint flakes off its generally from having a dirty surface, meaning you didnt clean it enough. also wait at least 24 hours before you start handling the pieces. with as many coats as you did the paint probalby wasnt properly cured i just use standard clear coat when i clear. you dont need vnyal clear because your not spraying vynal. your spraying over top of paint. and i wouldnt paint in the car.
