i have one built. had one in for about a week at the end of the season last year. worked ok, but really depends on what you want out of it. i wanted wireless internet and GPS, just never finished getting it all setup.

I'll be building one (hopefully) the end of this year, beginning of next year based on a mini-ITX mobo.
there's some really sweet "smart" power supplies coming out for carputers.

I'm like EZ... I want wireless and GPS. I'll be going with something like an 8" touchscreen. the audio will be routed through the AUX port on my HU.

if you don't want to run proprietary car-puter software then id suggest a bare bones version of windows, with autolaunching gps software and a media center. combine that with a touchscreen lcd and your all set.

I have mine in my sunfire all winter and it worked great. I set mine up at home useing 500mhz celery-on with windows xp and tv out. bought a dvd player with tv in, 2 inch mouse (scroll mouse is best), 8 inch keyboard, calculator/keypad, usb hub, web camera, gps reciever, wireless internet pci card, av cables, headphone jack, 20gb harddrive, cdbuner, and 200w+ power inverter. put it all in your trunk. if you run a ton of bass keep it far away from the hard drive.

Wireless internet in the car is kind of a joke... maybe if you use a signal booster you won't have to drive up and back up everywhere to get a good signal next to a house. I think some kind of satelite internet would be awesome. make sure your power supply stays cool and obviously everything else. gps is pretty handy... and freakin awesome with the right software.

The reason I took it out was because, it's over rated... got bored of it... so I just made it into a small portable package... getting a real laptop would be much better.

Building a car PC would be no big deal for me, but I'm having a hard time finding a "budget oriented screen". I have a 5", but I don't think it would be good enough....
