Legal to change gauge clusters?

I am pretty sure that the mileage of your car is stored in the ecu and it is illegal to tamper with the mileage counter. But the dealership told me it is illegal to put aftermarket gauge clusters in because it will mess with your stored mileage because the mileage is stored in both the cluster and ecu. I don't think this is true but I was jw??

BTW: I am swapping the factory one with an aftermarket cluster made by Black Cat Customs

They're lying. Cavaliers store the mileage and stuff in the bcm. Swapping out a cluster on your car won't erase mileage or anything. Hundreds of people have changed their cavy clusters out for one out of a fire and vice versa.

I swapped in a BCC cluster like you are planning on doing....same milage when I fired it back up!

Eh...old man with a Corvette now...it was bound to happen sooner rather than later right?

I had no issues with mine as well. Same mileage, Worked great.

The only thing I did loose was the trip counters. They seem to be stored in the cluster. But no big deal on that one, just reset and start at zero and calculate my gas mileage on the next tank of gas

If you have a digital odometer, it is stored in the BCM and nothing further is needed.

If you don't have a digital odometer, you are required to place a sticker on the inside of the door that shows the ending mileage of the removed cluster and the starting mileage of the new one. Not doing so is considered odometer tampering.

(in case someone without a digital odometer should come across this thread)
