You just have to remove the steering wheel, not the whole column

no need to pull the collum. just start at the edge of the dash, following it around and pulling the screws and just work your way thru it, its really not that bad and shouldnt take much longer then an hour.

once the steering wheel is pulled, how do you re set up the air bag and such so it works?

well find yourself a steering wheel puller and educate yourself on the airbag system.

unplug the battery pull the airbag fuse. then directly below the steering wheel on the backside of the dash there is a yellow connector, disconnect this. people generally say to wait 20 minutes. then unscrew the two screws on the backside of the steering wheel then slowly lift the airbag off the wheel and look at the backside, there will be a ground wire for your horn and then a yellow wire attached to the collum. disconnect that and the airbag will come right off. then just take the nut off the wheel and use the steeringwheel puller to get the wheel off.

No need for all that.

i agree. you HAVE to pull the fuse at least cause if not. when you plug it back in it could cause an electrical surge or even a spark which could set the airbags off. when i did mine i desconnected the battery, got rid of the fuse, and waited 10 minutes. then i pulled everything. you just have to make sure theres no current left in the wiring for the airbags.

The airbag has a fail-safe system. You MUST hit one of the sensors in the front to activate the airbag, which in no way, may I add, does the contents of the charge behave chemically like gun powder.

Case in point: When I replaced my steering wheel, one of the bolts stripped. The mechanic I brought it to used a GRINDER and a BLOW TORCH, right beside the bag. Neither the fuse or the battery was disconnected. He was confident nothing would happen, as was I.

That's a big negative on hitting the sensors. I don't know about the Cavvy but one of my mechanics set off the airbags on an F250 a few months ago just by disconnecting the steering column harness without pulling the fuse or disconnecting the battery. The fourteen stitches to the side of his head and the ringing ears from the deployment will be a sure reminder to him to disconnect the battery and pull the fuse before messing around again.
