Hey -- I shortened the shifter on my auto a while ago... and upon working on my car (building a custom speaker and sound stage) I ended up breaking the shifter. I was getting my toolbad out of the passenger seat (about 55lbs) and it scraped across the shifter, and broke the yellow button, level with the outer tube.

I know I can cut the tube shorter to reveal more of the yellow button, but Im not sure if I can go that short and still have it be functional.

My question is: Will any auto shifter 95+ work on my car? Or do I have to get one that has a 4t40e trans? Im sure a 4t40e shifter is easy to find, this is a "just in case"

They're all interchangeable. I have a shortened '95-'99 in my car right now. The only difference with it is that it doesn't match up with all the bolt holes in the center console. It shifts and all just fine though.

There are two junkyards in Aurora that I go to all the time. I was just at U Pull It yesterday and they have about 20 Cavaliers and Sunfires, mostly '95-'99, but they do have a few auto '00-'02s. Both yards charge a $2.00 entrance fee, but their prices on stuff are very good.
