Hi.. I'm just starting to fix up my 97 cavalier.. this is going to sound like a dumb question but is my dashboard vinyl or plastic? I want to paint parts of it and I need to know if it's vinyl, if so, I can't use krylon paint on it.
Its vinyl im pretty sure of it. The area below the dashboard is plastic(radio bezel). You can use paint/dye on the dash itself as long as you prep it right. Also make sure the paint you do purchase is capable of going on vinyl, cause some paints will look like @!#$ and flake off after a while.
what kind of paint/dye do you suggest for the vinyl and where can I get it? I found a tutorial on prepping it so I'll make sure to do that the right way, I just want to be sure I use the right kind of paint so it dosen't flake off.
I believe krylon makes a paint that bonds onto vinyl and I know duplicolor also carries a paint for vinyl. If you plan on just painting the dash clean it with alcohol and paint, shouldnt be any sanding involved for this piece to my knowledge. I may be wrong but I doubt it, also you'll need some clear coat as well. When your looking for the paint at a auto store ask for one that is made to be used on vinyl(should say vinyl paint on it)
okay thank you very much! one more question.. do you think my color will be hard to match..?
Looks like a turquoise color it might be hard, it might not, it depends on what shop you go and buy it at. If they carry that color should be easy if they dont try to find a place that does.
I just want to say one thing before you set your eyes on doing this. Take into consideration the glare you might get from painting your dash if you can deal with it by all means do it if you cant I wouldnt suggest this mod. Instead I would suggest painting the radio bezel the same turquoise blue as the car still get the color in the car without the glare...
DON'T evereverevereverevereverevereverEVER sand vinyl. That said I used the Krylon Fusion on my dash and it came out fine. I seem to hear about a lot of people having problems with this but i didn't so whatever.
well yeah, that's what I meant, I was gonna do the area around the radio in the turqoise color. I was thinking about doing the rest of the dash over again in a black since mine looks really old and has weird white/blue dots on it.. (have no idea where they came from) just above the glove compartment.
for the bezel area just follow Slimmatics(Toms) sticky on the top of the page. For the white and bluet i really cant tell without a pic of it but i would say re vinyl the dash to a color you like
or paint it as well.

you can get some black vinyl dye for the top dash. or re-wrap it in a fabric u like
This is the combo I used
Is still a work in progress but it seems to be working so far
that looks great, that's exactly how I want mine to look except turqoise on the radio bezel. I'm gonna try that combo.
