how to-trunk liner

for me this wasnt too hard at all... i have done several fiberglasss projects before, some major, and a ton of little things. im not to sure how familiar you are with fiberglass so i dont mean to insult you buy anything i say...

to start-
get all materials needed...
-fiberglass mat (i used 2 packages)
-fbber glass resin/hardner (i used 2 cans)
-old glass bowl to mix resin
-scisors to cut the mat
-small brushes to spread the resin..you will
go through a couple so buy a package
-duct tape
-rubber gloves

once you have all materials-
-fully cover the underside of the deck lid in duct tape
making sure that there are no gaps in the tape
-cut the mat into sections about 2 inches by 4 inches.
-mix up about a 1-2 cups of resin with a small squirt of
hardener(dont use too much hardener or the resin will dry
before you have time to use it)
-using the gloves.. dip the pieces into the resin and lay
evenly across the duct tape and make sure to slightly
overlap each piece, let sit about an hour to dry before
next layer. i only did 2 layers for mine. go over any thin
spots with more mat...use brushes to work out any bubbles
in the mat when overlaping, and to make sure the resin is
spread evenly

after final layer dries-
here is a tricky part, you will have to seperate the
fiberglass from the tape, i found that the easiest way
was to peel up each edge of the tape and bring the 4
corners of the fiberglass piece up with it, the fiber-
glass is strong but dont pull to hard to be sure
not to break it. imediatly take the tape off the deck lid
and use goo-gone to get the remainding glue off

once seperated-
place your fiberglass piece back on the lid and with a
marker, trace where you need to trim, and cut along that
line with a skill saw, remember to cut out the holes for
the lid itself, and the notches where the arms go through

now you have your liner, you can either wrap it or sand it and paint it

here are a few progress pics..

try it..theres really nothing to lose but a few bucks and a couple hours! good luck!!

Could you use a large plastic bag as well?

Seems it would come off easier and also not leave the goo behind like the tape?

I dont think a bag would get the right shape your looking for when doing a project like this. You could use aluminum foil if you wanted toalong with wax on the bottom of it.

the bag would move too much

the bag wouldnt work for a few reassons, the resin would most likely eat right through the plastic before you had a chance to finish the first layer. foil will work.. however it tears very easily. you want the fiberglass to fit as tight as possible so it looks like it is meant to be there, i believe that the tape is the best bet

Pretty Decent write up. I actually hadn't even thought about making one myself, I was gonna buy the OEM Toyota peice. But this is so simple, I may just go this route.

Awesome job!

nice job.... i was thinking about seeing what i could find in the junk yard to fit my lid, but this seems a pretty easy route to go too.

how much did it cost you by the way?

how would this be done if there was dyna mat placed underneath the trunkliner... would it be easiest to simply place some material the same (or close) thickness to the dynamat under the tape and do it that way?

You could use aluminum foil couldn't you?

Even vaseline would work. Just a bit of a mess to clean up.

Hey does this Method work for any Fiberglass work/Fabrication. I was thinking about starting to learn how to do it. This is an amazing writeup! I may have to try this!

Re: how to-trunk liner

Zach you can use aluminum foil but for better results go with duct tape and put some wax on it as well so the mold is easier to pop off...

Jaser, learning how to fiberglass is probably the most useful thing you can learn for a car customizing it. However in a peice like this there isnt a great deal of fiberglass work but your still working with a timed item. Wrapping is the bitch part depending on what look you go for (vinyl carpet, carbon etc). For a first timer working with fiberglass this will be a great first project for you I think. Just follow the direction Part II listed and your good to go.

how do you wrap fabric onto fiberglass?

i can wrap vinyl around plastic pieces but as far as this goes id be lost.

i am in no way trying to brag, but i have been fiberglassingg for about 3 years now and i am very good at building/modifing almost anything out of fiberglass, so this project was a breeze. for the people who are just starting or want to try this, as long as you can visualize what you want the final product to come out as, you should have no problem. as far as wraping goes...i have wrapped everything there is to wrap in the interior of a cavalier and sunfire, and i really mean everything, its all cutting and stretching. the only way i could really explain it is in person or video. if there are a few people who want to see a write up on wraping i could give it a shot

wrappin vinyl on fiberglass is a bitch and very tideous cause you can break the piece espically a piece like this. Since for vinyl you have to heat and stretch , heat and stretch so on and so on. For carpet start from the middle and work your way out, stretching and gluing as you go. I really cant explain it online since its best to be shown visually.

^^ yes, you want to start from the deepest point in the piece you are wrapping

I'm going to attempt this as I'm trying to get into some fiberglassing. I want to add gauges to my center console where the cup holders are and this would be a good start...the trunk.

I have a spare center console as well to try it on first so not messing up what I have.

I wrapped flat pieces in my trunk in vinyl already and that was easy but a shaped piece would be hard!! Still going to try it though as I like to learn and do it myself!

Great write up and very useful skill...I say everyone should try this at least once and see what you can create!

wrapping vinyl i thought was easy. i did the bottom part of my console and i though that was easy (post pics if anyone cares to see)

but ive never dony anything like this with fiberglass this will be my weekend project and first glass experience.

@ PART II: What type of carpet did you use on the liner and where did you get it? Thanks.

looks like it came out great man!

Same method I used to make my trunk lid...worked like a charm
