proven or opion

i read in the sticky about repaiting your interior that using an orbital sander is a bad choice. is this proven or personal opion, and if it is a matter of circular gooves in the finished product, what about a random orbital sander? does this apply to exterior aswell?

somewhat both. ive used an orbital without any problems. but it also depends on the person. if your using a 60 grit and not paying attention you could put big gouges in the plastic that you'd need to fill wich can be a pain, but if your using like say a 100 grit or so and paying attention it can speed thigns up. i use an orbital, a mouse sander (best option) and then the hands were the sanders cant reach.

i assume u mean a DA which really isnt an orbital. its a combo

D/A=Dual Action. The pad on a D/A sander rotates (like a grinder), but as it rotates, it also orbits (like a secondary rotation around it's own axis), so that the pad doesn't stay in one place as it rotates.

Think about how the earth rotates around the sun. Now think about how the earth has it's own rotation. Spinning on it's own axis, while also rotating around the sun's axis.

i use a DA with a 150 grit to get started. then hand sand the edges it cant get. prime, repeat, etc etc

A DA will work fine if you are trying to get rid of a lot of texture. Start with like 180 grit paper (hand sand in hard to reach places), then repeat with 220 grit. After the 220 you can spray some primer. After the primer dries I usually watersand the piece with 320 or 400 grit until smooth. Make sure you clean good with wax/grease remover before spraying the piece with paint!
