Just need to find a +12v switched source
Saturday, June 02, 2007 1:08 PM
Hi guys, I've been searching this and the audio/electronics forum for half an hour trying to find out where I'm supposed to be splicing into a 12v (for my wideband and autometer gauges)... Everyone is naming red or orange or brown or whatever coloured wires, but I have no idea where I'm supposed to find these... Do I need to take the dash apart or is it under the steering column? If anyone has a pic that would be great. Thanks!

Its in your steering column. Look for the pink 8-10 Gauge wire. Splice into that, it wont be terribly easy btw....give yourself some time.

IIRC, orange wire, stereo harness = 12v+ switched (been a while since I took my dash out)

yeah if you want orange, dont go looking in your column, i believe thats the illumination wire for your gauges. if you hooked it up to that, your new gauges would only get power at night, or when you turned you dash lights on. come to think of it the illumination wire may be brown...

Use your windshield wiper circuit, switched 12V, its what my stereo is hooked too.

Very easy to get to also, right behind the fuse panel there is an open space to get to it.

Okay I guess you guys must not have clutch pedals because its f-ing retarded trying to do ANYTHING behind that fuse panel. I took a few pics because I'm still confused as to what you guys are trying to tell me to look at in the fuse box because not one of these looks easy to get at... Are you saying I run the wire to the fuse block itself or the wire that connects to the fuse? Is the one I want the little metal rectangle in these pics? If so, how do I connect any wire there? Jam it in between the fuse and the the fuse box from the inside?

Anyone with a quick reply would be greatly appreciated.

I found the pink wire Josh was talking about, that looks super easy (connects with an adapter onto the steering column with about 5 other wires?)

PS is there some 'easy' thing I'm missing to make some space back there? I noticed you can pop the fuse panel off a bit, is it possible to move it to somewhere that you can get at everything more easily? I HATE electrical stuff...

since i don't smoke i replaced the lighter with a toggle switch and wired my stereo in there. It doesn't require very much wire and it was easy as hell.

Under the dash, from the ignition switch is where you need to look. you can unscrew the tilt knob, and pull apart the upper and lower portion behind the steering wheel. The correct color is BROWN, although you can get away with orange. Brown is an actual accessory wire, orange is ignition. orange wont get 12 volts until its in start position, Brown will get it at acc. it's pretty easy to splice into, just get some in-line strippers and solder.

OK, heres all the information you need, I busted out my car wiring CD with all the info you need. And I would have sent you down a bad road, pink isn't the wire you want, its Orange or Brown.

12V CONSTANT WIRE RED Ignition harness
STARTER WIRE YELLOW Ignition harness
IGNITION WIRE PINK Ignition harness
SECOND IGNITION WIRE WHITE Ignition harness
ACCESSORY WIRE ORANGE Ignition harness
SECONDARY ACCESSORY WIRE BROWN Ignition harness

Yes, if there is a brown it will work too, they are accessory as Fision is saying.
All of these wires should be in that same snake you took a picture of with the pink wire hanging out.

Go with orange. Most gms don't have a secondary but all have orange.Just crawl under your dash, cut the large loom and test the 8 gauge orn. Than plice right into it, I recommened soder the wrap but most ppl just tee it.

Brown is not just with headlights.....orange and brown are both 12V+ all the time in accessory
Ignition is pink

In the 03-+'s I use the window switch for an easy switched 12v source. Pop up the power window swich, get a test light, turn your ignition on, find a wire with power, then turn ignition off, to find the right wire on the switch. I am telling you this because I dont remember what color wire it is, but it is very easy to get to.
