Interior Fabric
Monday, June 11, 2007 11:07 PM
Alright so i had a little idea, its probably been done a bunch of times, but can't seem to find to much on it. So i have completely repainted my interior, rewrapped the rear deck in new black fabric. Was going to complete the job by doing my headliner and door inserts in the same fabric, but i was thinking about wrapping my center arm rest and my deepest most dash panel also, (the part the holds the glove compartment and what seems to line the fire wall and window)

Reason being is i live in colorado and it gets so hot and cold depending on the hour LOL no really the temp changes so much and it cracked the that big plastic panel i just did a horrible job of describing that lines the winsheild behind the top part of the dash. So i thought instead of trying to fix or just going to a junk yard near by (which told me they want 100 bucks for it) i would just re wrap it with fabric.

I don't know if this is a good idea or not i think it might look good, but i don't know what does anybody else think?

headliner = good luck, unless its light fabric, and you use industrial glue, take it from me, ive tried the 3m stuff here in CO

as for the upper part, to get to it you will need to remove most of your dash and it may look kinda lame but it may be a good solution to that damn crack

yea, to get to the top piece there, you'll have to remove the entire dash. the top piece and the bottom of the dash is all one piece. if you do that tho, i think it'll look really good. and if you do, i'd some how make a bracket or something to keep it lined up where it is cracked, that way it doesn't become uneven under the fabric.

BLAH .. i wraped mine without taking it out..i used a black suede on the thin dash part..just got to take the vinyl part off so you can put it on right and tuck it down under the windshield..did my door inserts in blue suede and turned out nice..theres a pic of my interior on page 4 of the LED cluster mod thread

oh i know about removing the dash thats not a problem, hell about this time a consider myself a certified cavalier dash remover i can't even begin to count how many times i've completely gutted my interior, doing stereo, going through 3 different gauges, and fixing mess ups from when i painted.

I never even thought about the glue not sticking on the headliner, i used that 3M fabric glue from Hancock Fabrics (Same place i get my fabric from) on my rear deck and it worked great but then again i don't have gravity pulling down on the fabric when it starts to swelter in my car. So i guess if i do my headliner i will definetely need to get something a bit more adherant.

But what about doing the arm rest in fabric , i am pretty good at wrapping things in fabric I've done quite a few boxes, and my rear deck. The arm rest doesn't look to bad. Has anybody done this?

like i said....i would reccommend using contact cement for the headliner. depending on the weight of the fabric, its tough to get it to stick up there without going thru
alot of adhesive spray....which in turn soaks thru sometimes and distorts the fabric. very small ammounts of contact cement will keep it up there for a long time!

i wrap everythi ng with contact cement now, and.......i wrap alot of stuff!

What kind of Contact cement did you use? I have used that Liquid Nails Neoprene Contact Cement, but not sure if thats what i should use to be wrapping fabric.

Thanks for all the help so far.
