Good old Dash light problem

Yeah, I know... I did I search.

I see that lots of people have hed problems with their J-bodies after installing an aftermarket Stereo. My problem might be related to that, might not.

I just got a 97 sunfire SE on Saturday, and I just drove in at night for the first time last night. First thing I noticed is that unlike my 97 grand am, the headlights did NOT come on by themselves when it got dark outside.

Second thing I noticed is when I turned the lights on manually, the cluster lights flashed once, and then went out....and stayed out.

O...K...

It does have an aftermarket CD player, but my Brother in law swears that the lights worked fine as of friday night, and he installed the CD player years ago. (he has no reason to lie to me, he gave me the car for free, I'm not buying it off him)

My question is, what are some of the things that could cause not only the dash lights to go out, but the HVAC lights as well? This isn't a bulb problem, and yes, I've spun the dimming wheel until I'm blue in the face.

The turn signals, shift indicator, and the DRL light works fine on the dash, but none of the illumination of the guages.

Where do I start?

Check to see if you have reverse lights too....

if your reverse lights are out then you have blown a fuse that links it all together...at least that is what happened to mine.

No dash lights but everything else in the interior worked...reverse lights were out and that was the fuse that needed to be replaced.

Weird huh?

Eh...old man with a Corvette now...it was bound to happen sooner rather than later right?

yeah man that definetly sounds like a fuse check every fuse in the box that could be related, it may not be very obvious. I had a problem like this in my moms 95 cavy it took awhile, but i got it solved.

Hope you get if fixed that would definetly piss me off.

OK, I'm an idiot.

I checked the cluster fuse, and it was fine.. I didn't see there was a INST fuse, and that one WAS blown.

live and learn

should have said console fuse, not cluster fuse.
