Was a red OEM interior option offered on the Sunfire in 1996?

I do not believe so. There were many Cars that GM produced prior to 95 that did, sunbirds i have seen did.....sunfires no.

a local yard here has a pre-99 fire gt that has factory red interior; including the seats, carpet, etc.

Yes, red and also teal were interior options on early Sunfires. There were also white vinyl seats that were offered as an option. Cavaliers were offered with a complete light blue interior, headliner, dash, everything.

Here is a picture of the teal Sunfire interior (everything that's teal would be red in a red interior obviously ):

As you can see in the picture, the seats, cloth door panel inserts, lower door panels, lower dash, radio/HVAC bezel, glovebox and lower center console were all color matched.

These colored interiors are becoming more and more rare. I have seen the red, teal, white vinyl seats and light blue in person and they all look pretty good if well maintaned. The red interior always ends up looking kind of orange to me though.

I had seen the teal, thought it was after market! White does look like $hi7, and i thought there was no other than beige and charcoal and white.
