i put a universal shift knob in my cavalier and try to pull the key out of the ignition the key was locked , but as soon i replaced the universal shift knob back to the factory shift knob i was able to pull the key out. why is that and what happen?

im going to assume this universal shift knob is for a manual trans, and seeings how you have an automatic; heres the problem. notice how your auto knob has a button you push to change gears? thats the yellow shaft inside the shifter assembly. when you installed your new knob you would have pushed that down all the way, so that you can change gears freely without a button to push. the car wont let you take the key out unless that button is released, same as if your in neutral. you may be able to bypass the yellow pushrod, but be careful, because without it theres nothing to keep you from leaning on your shifter and slipping into reverse.

I've been having the same problem with my automatic and my after market shifter knob is designed for automatics and i made sure it fit well... It's at random, it's driving me crazy.
There's a website called optionsauto.com and there they have a shift knob for automatic transmissions. Go there and tell me what you think.
