Instrument cluster question
Sunday, January 29, 2006 1:01 AM
i have a 99 sunfire wit digital gauge cluster. i was wondering if i got a cluster off ebay (same cluster) and i plugged it in would it know my mileage or does it need to be calibrated. My esxisting cluster has a blinker bulb out and the odometer bulb out.

yes it will, digital clusters hold your mileage in your ecm... when you plug it in it will buzz and light up and show you the car's mileage that it came from then it will go off. When you start your car your mileage will be showing.

Completely wrong. Only 2000+ stored the mileage in the BCM, the 99's and 98's with digital odometers still stored the mileage in the cluster. Swapping your cluster you won't have your correct mileage and it will need to be sent out to be calibrated.

are you positive that 2000's and up store the mileage in the BCM? my illumination lights behind the TEMP, TACH, SPEEDO, and GAS are shorted out and only work occasionally...all the MILs and BLINKERS work. i tore the dash apart the other day thinking that there were replaceable bulbs back there, as that was what i was told by a HAYNES book...nope, non-replaceable LEDs soldered into the board. i was thinking about finding going to a junkyard or something to find something for a 2.4 w/auto trans, if there's any difference between the different engine/trans combos. the alternative being going to the dealership, having the TECH 2 put on, finding out which cluster needs to be put on and shelling out $200+. which brings me back to the question of, are you sure that the mileage will come up as being correct on a totally different cluster?--and yes, i realize that this reply comes many, many months after it's original post

thanks
