Hey all,
I was just wondering... has anyone ever tried taking their door panels apart? The Door panel looks like its two pieces welded together in plastic, but has anyone been able to pry them apart without breaking the pieces? Im not talking about the cloth material that u can rewrap... Im talking about the entire door panel... I'd like to avoid painting the interior since they flake easily.
My reason for asking this is because Im thinking of making my interior two tone graphite and tan together. My door panel, I'd like it to be graphite on top piece and tan on bottom piece, and possibly re-wrap the cloth piece with black vinyl cover from JoAnn Fabrics.
THANKS ALL!!!

the door panels in the cavs are plastic welded together. you can drill them out and figure out a way to reattach them to each other. so yeah its possible to do. and id really like to see that done....
but what about the rear panels? they are one piece so you can really do a two tone the same as you could the fronts.
i know the 95 - 99 are 2 piece plastic welded together and im thinking the 00+ are just 1 piece plastic. mine came stock 2 toned . graphite vinyl on top and tan plastic on the bottom . so you might be able to just look around for some junk cavs that are already 2 toned like that.
I NEED a 97-99 LD9 engine harness for an auto.PM if u hav info.!!
TABS: The rear quarter panels are not my concern... I already have an idea to balance out the two tone for that part... but we'll see. Are you saying the plastic weld is only welded in spots which is easily drilled out to take apart? Not a steady circumfrence weld like on an exhaust system? Also, I havent forgotten about your piece that i want to buy...I'll get in touch with you about that soon... Im just looking for other things first right now before i start spending moola...
REDNINE7: I'd like to see pictures of your interior... if you dont mind? That way it'd give me a general idea of what to expect and to see if i like it or not.
THANKS!!!

IF they are actually welded together... they are plastic spot welds... there is basically a plastic peg that goes through the hole of the other peice and then all melted together. all you have to do is take an exacto knife and cut a small circle in the back of the panel where these little welds are then just pull them apart carefully with a bit of force...
as a GOOD way to secure them back together so that there easily desembled is:
-cut off the melted end that still remains on the peg once you pull the pieces apart
-you wll notice the peg is hollow.
-re-align the peices and find a very short screw with a washer (or just a large head) and screw it in...
-thats it... do this to all the spots where there were spot welds and it will be just as secure as ever... i did this with my door handle trim... works perfect and is the BEST way to reattach this stuff so you can easily take them apart down the rode if you have to repaint or w.e.... very simple and effective method.
hope that helps to some extent.
sorry man i forgot to mention my interior is no longer the same color it was. i repainted everything black and red. but i found a picture of a similar interior.
mine was a little more tan though.

not if done correctly.
also, if i remember right, 95-99 panels are 2 pieces, and 00-05 are one piece. i know my 03 panels are one piece(top and bottom)
If you have CF engine bay pieces, SELL THEM TO ME!
Built Not Bought
redline: hmm...not sure if ive ever seen a natural interior like that. kinda cool.
hazen: not a prob man....but paul is right on how they are set up.
well that pisses me off... I guess my 02 is one piece... I'll have to check it out. Could I still... cut it apart and attach the top to the bottom like 95-99 sides according to Paul? Why do things have to be so complicated when GM changes stuff between 95-99 and 00-05?! gahhhhhh
I love my Cav but GM sucks!
Guess Who's back!!!
yea tabs i didnt see too many cavs with my interior. i either saw all graphite or all tan with a graphite bezel. either way it didnt match my idea lol.
hanzenrider man if u lived close to me id trade ya door panels because i want the all plastic panels lol

i dont think the plastic tabs would be in there if your cut it in half you may have to fab something up, im sure it can be done but it would probably take some time creativity, but i would like to see the finished product if u get it done!!
i wouldnt do it man... i think it would be to obvious because there wouldnt be plastic spot welds like i said because its 00+... if i were you i would go to a junkyard and find some if i were gonna try it... so that if it doesnt work (which is a good possibility) your not F@$%ed... other than that... ask people on here if 99 and below door panels which are two piece according to Joey, fit on then do what i said with a different color.
either way its not looking good... and i would highly recommend painting... if you do it properly according to the sticky, sand, primer (WELL), and paint (with multiple coats of each) you wont find chipping or flaking to be a problem. i know i havent since i painted my dash trim, vent trim, and handle trim red on my 03 cav.
hope that helps man and good luck on whatever you decide.
he has a point, if it doesn't work then your gonna be rollin with no door panels or half panels lol, it gets annoying after a while of not having panels in there too, mainly when you cut your d@mn hand on the metal stickin our for the door handle! that sucks let me tell you! So you might as well just hit up a junk yard and see what u can come up with there, whatever u decide to do is up to you... good luck!
yea man i agree with the others. go to a junk yard and pick up some 95-99 door panels. those are already 2 piece. because if you were to cut the 1 piece door panels , i think it would be alot more work to make them 2 pieces. and if your concerned about flaking i suggest using single stage car paint. lasts longer than rattle can, more durable, and lays smooth. as long as you prep the door right the first time then i dont see why you should have flaking. also if u choose to paint them, i suggest using this product called "scuff it". its an orange bottle of some liquid that helps you prep vinyl and plastic with the texture that our cars have.

I live in Arizona... Hot State... things fade.
Guess Who's back!!!
i live in texas man. so im no stranger to heat either lol. but the paint wont fade in the interior.only thing that really fades is fabric

tinted windows reduce fading alot too....
I checked my doors today on my car and wow... it is one piece. I can tell easily . What a disappointment
Guess Who's back!!!
I have an 02 and I two-toned my interior...just mask and tape it all and it's no different than doing the exterior.
Also, I've had this done for two years now and no flaking, no fading! If done correctly it's no different than the exterior paint. I used only exterior automotive paint, prepped it right, primer, sand and sand some more then hit it with 3 coats of color, 3 coats of clear. Everythign was shot with a paint gun as well...no can.
I've seen some dang nice can paint jobs too though...it's all in the prep work to be honest. Do it right and either will last as long as you own the car I'd think!
Anyway...on to a few pics...
Eh...old man with a Corvette now...it was bound to happen sooner rather than later right?
Isn't the part that the fabric attaches to on the 00-02 cavs plastic welded on to the door panel?

if its anything like 03+ (which i think it is) then yes... and in that case the method i mentioned above works great.
