i got a 2004 cavalier auto trans. i just bought a new shift knob that resembles a manual knob so i want to get a shift boot to place under it but how would i install the shift boot? any one have any ideas or have done this similiar project? thanks alot
sunfires came with an auto boot. get one of them from ebay or a junker. otherwise, just buy a manual boot and tuck it under the shift bezel.
how do i open the shift bezel to get it tucked under. i see what your saying and thats what i was thinking too but i have no idea how i would open it. i dont want to mess around with it and then not be able to fix it then im screwed

the auto shift bezel on the cav should just pop right off. get a flat end screw driver and pry it off.
yeah the center console comes up and then just pull the ring off bolt back down and then add the manuel shift boot thats what i did since the consoles on the cavs and sunfires from i belive 00-up are all the same i know 00-05 cavs are the same and the sunfires 03-05 are the same ones from a cavy.
okay cool man thanks. should i worry about messing anything up? i have the power windows which has the buttons on the center console.
no the power window controls just pull up and then the harness will release from the bottom. since ur just liftin it up so the ring can be moved off then u dont put the boot on untill u bolt back down it will clip inplace. when u remove the auto knob take a flat head and pry the clip pin out if u look on the back side(faceing the hvac controls) ull see a slot inside there there is a clip that needs removal and then the knob just lifts up. also when u put the new knob on make sure it is low enough to trigger ur gear so u can pull it out of park yet high enough so u can still turn off and remove the key. if the knob doesnt release high enough the key will stay in the ingsion so good luck n take ur time.
thanks man i appreciate it!
just put a whole center consul in from a 5 speed...
well the 5 speed n the auto are both i dentical just the diff is the autos have a little rubber trim ring so when bolted down it seals around the gear houseing the manual just a boot that clips into place soo u see the 2 minutes it takes to remove the ring and place the boot is easier and cheaper then replaceing the entire console. now if u got it cheap then u got a spare so not bad then just m2c
