Air Vent Painting
Thursday, November 01, 2007 9:33 PM
Ok, I saw a picture of a Sunfire that has the 4 air vents on the dash painted and was thinking of doing this to my car. My interior is beige and I want to paint them black. What is the easiest way to remove these and paint them? Or, what else would look good painted in regards to this area? Also, what is the recommended paint for something like this? If anyone has any suggestions or pictures of this done on their cars I would really appreciate any advice you can give. Thanks!

if you wont them black then just go to a junk yard and pick them up be a lot easier than painting

^^^ yes... that would be easiest and probably the best way... but if you still want to paint them......

Just grab a set of needle nose pliers... grap ahold of the vent in the center and pull (be carefull not to break them though)

The defroster vent just pops out... you can coax it out with flathead screwdriver... just be carefull.

The best paint to use would probably be Krylon Fuzion.... but if you can't find it.... regular enamel spray paint works ok.

set them down on a piece of paper (or a throw away back drop)... and lightley spray one coat on then holding the can at a slight angle (first coat wont completely coat them). make sure its a pretty light coat.

Let the paint dry completely... them apply another light coat at a slight angle coming from the other direction..... let the paint dry... and repaeat those steps painting from a different direction every time left to right... right to left..... top to bottom.... bottom to top).. until the paint looks even and you get the look you want.

multible light coats (making sure to allow time to dry inbetween) seems to work best. Also.. half way through... you will want to slide the vent tap over to make sure you get the unpainted spot behind it (make sure it's all the way to one side before you start).

After everythings dry.... just pop them back into the car by hand....

thats how I did mine.... they have been holding up forever and where black before I painted them silver.

yup..... btw if you've never painted anything before.... plastic vents are pretty easy... but it never hurts to practice on something first....
