ok I have been thinking about a new way to paint the "top" part of the dash.. you know the vinyl part...
steps in order:
1. clean dash
2. use dupli-color vinyl and dash paint
3. layer many coats of the paint it and let dry
4. use about 2 cans worth
5. lay dupli-color filler primer and let dry
6 spray many coats then sand down smooth
7. use dupli- color back paint and coat the whole dash
8. then let it dry then spray clear coat on it and let dry
9. cross fingers and hope it works
so do you guys think this will work
why use the dye then to begin with?
well i i do not think that the regular primer would stick to the vinyl so i though maybe if i used the dye first than the primer would stick to it
just use the vinyl and dash paint that what i did and it sticks great. looks good too.

if you clean the vinyl good(with something like alcohol or thinner) and make sure its clean and dry, the primer will stick to the dash. but dont expect it to look like glass.

yeah if you are going for a black dash, then this is all you will need to do. clean it then dye it.
or spend an extra few bucks and get the SEM cleaner and dye. stuff will work circles around dupliccolor
coming back in 2008...
yea thats all i did was clean it really good and used dupli color came out really nice and has not faded or chipped in 3 years

heres a pic of my dash dyed black
HOw did you get it soo @!#$ smooth
If you want the smooth look (like glass) be prepared to peel the vinly covering off, and then prep the dash for real paint.

thats easy, you just stand far enough away when you take the picture that the texture doesnt show up
haha that is pretty much it
or you can actually sand down the vynal and make it smooth
sand down the vynal? let me know how that works for ya! should look really good
why not just buy black vinyl and recover it then dye or paint the airbag cover?
seems like the easiest way i can think of?
yes... you can paint it like that. thats how i did mine! only i didnt go that crazy with the layers
i used vynal becaues i couldnt get the previous dye off and with half of it dyped and the other half not.. you could tell with black paint on top.
i sprayed the vynal dye.. let it dry, sprayed the primer -- let it sit for a day or until it was no longer tacking
then sprayed the color (flat black) --and let that sit until it was no longer tacky/sticky
all said, done, installed and tire shined!!
this is what it looked like with the flat black WITHOUT tireshine:
and with tireshine:
the dash had more of a glossy finish than the doors, possibly due to the diff. material
im really happy with how it turned out!! i havent had any issues at all since and its been over a year.
