So I've decided to put automatic locks in my car. I am aware of the aftermarket kits available, but have another idea. If I found a cav (or any relative gm car) with automatic locks, could I take the wires, switches, solenoids, everything out of that car and transfer it to mine? Is this a good idea, or am I making things too difficult? Would I be able to get one with remote access. I guess I would have to get the right RPO code, and get a clicker from the dealership? I wouldn't want it if I couldn't have the remote. Please tell me if this is something worth doing or if this is just stupid lol. Thanks in advance!

That's A LOT of work, when aftermarket systems are cheap, easy to install, and are made to be put in after the fact.
A factory system, the wires are run with everything else, in the harness. Which you would have to seperate out. If I had a donor car, I would grab the switches, solenoids, and brakets for the solenoids, and wire up your own system using those couple parts.
But to grab all the wiring/relays.....not worth it IMO.
Its not very hard if you get the right diagrams and i used my remote start for the locks, i did it with my 03, the locks, windows, airconditioning, cruise and power mirrors and all worked out well.
this way you get the parts designed to fit in the particular car. i just took my time
Since your car is a '96, you can add the remote entry without too much trouble if you can find a donor car in a yard with the parts in it. The remote module is a black box in the trunk, drivers side, up near the wheel well under the mat. If you're lucky the harness in your car will have a plug for it, or you'll have to grab it from the donor along with the lock actuators and their harnesses. The donor should also have a remote trunk release solenoid and related wiring. You can get remotes off of eBay and the programming instructions are in the FAQ.
Thanks guys. John I see what you mean about too much work lol. I think I'll take a trip down there this weekend and see what I can dig up. Thanks for the info guys.
