Im thinking of starting my first fiberglass project here soon and im planning on putting a gauge pod on top of the steering column, i saw somebody else had it and i kinda liked the idea. So what would i use to house the gauge itself? and would i need to glass the entire top half of the steering column or just the side where the gauge is going to sit?
You can buy a single gauge pod to house the gauge itself. You only need to glass the side that you are adding the pod to, the other sides you can just sand down the texture to give it a smooth finish.
Keep us posted with pictures.

o ok thanks man and i will being posting pics of my progress just waiting for the income to get here so i can buy all my stuff
heres a thought would i be able to use a piece of PVC pipe to hold my gauge?

provided its the same diamiter as the guage itself I wouldnt see why it would be a problem, find a way to pop the gauge in after the pvc pipe is glassed into place, and then if you can use a trim ring of sorts to keep the gauge in place.
thats what i was thinking to, i guess we'll see how it works
i use PVC on all the gauge bezels I do for people. there is no size out there to fit a standard gauge, so you have to trim the inside quite a bit to fit it.
i have a single gauge pod for sale that could make your life alot easier on this project.
haha nice sig and you've been pm'd
I use 2" PVC pipe that i cut into 1/4" slices.

Yep most gauge sizes are 2-1/16th of I remember right so 2" work perfect. I used this on my current project I haven't shared yet.

just wondering but why do you need to put that spacer between the gauge and gauge holder?
Its not a spacer. The PVC gets glasses into the project, cleaned up, and the gauge mounts in it. It is just one easy way of mounting gauges.
See the white ring? Thats the PVC ring glassed into the bezel and i started cleaning it up.
Here is after i finished cleaning it up and primered it.
Installed.

well i got almost of my supplies im just waiting for my gauges to get it so i can make it fit into the pvc pipe ill throw so pics up tonight or tommorrow
Well got everything i need just still waiting on the gauges should be here soon though. 2 questions
1 what kind of fabric should i cover it with? would a t-shirt work or should i use fleece, i heard fleece soaks up alot of resin though so im not sure which would be better.
2 whichever fabric i use should i just hot glue gun it to the plastic or is there a better way to do it, just not sure if it will hold up
heres some pics before i start.
big bag O mat
Mock up of how it will be positioned
not telling you not to mount it there, but it almost seems like its just too much.. why not something similar to to tinks.. or maybe even if you just redo the dash pad area and mount it to the right side of the steering wheel?..
on the steering wheel it just seems like it would block the other gauges.. just my oppinion though..
it should be ok i keep my steering wheel down and its postioned between the RPM and speedo, and if it doesn't work out ill put it somewhere this is mostly just a practice run since ive never done this before.
bet he can't see his gauges lol
t-shirt will work fine.
I highly suggest not using hot glue. fiberglass resin has a tendency to seperate fromt the glue causing issues.
I use CA glue
i figured it was something along the lines of superglue ill have to check out the accelerator stuff when i go out to pick up the glue later thanks
Like Rick mentioned, it can be found at any hobby store. You don't have to use the accelerator, but most of the time I prefer to use it. The CA glue dries in 15ish seconds without it, but most of the time with making shapes for glass work, you need a quicker bond, which is where the accelerator comes in. It is very strong.
They also sell a de-bonder, so if you get it on your hands or mis-mount a piece, you can always de-bond it and try again.
very useful tool when it comes to glassing

i have a noobish question, i havnt really looked at it but how does the cover on top of the steering column come off?? im going to be putting a gauge there.
horsepower is the force that determines at what speed you hit the wall, torque is the force that determines how far you take the wall with you after you hit it.
