Custom Dash
Saturday, March 14, 2009 3:55 PM

This will be my first time attempting to redo a dash in a car.

My car: '99 Cavalier Z24 5Spd Manual
Just bought it. I will have it in my possession tomorrow and I want to get to work right away so I can have it done by Summer.

I've seen a lot of custom designs.. a few on here and some elsewhere.
So, here it goes..

I want all the goodies moved from behind the wheel to the center facing me.. the right edge I want to curve down and combine into my Console. I don't want a Passenger Airbag.

I want to incorporate a custom snug-fit spot for my XM and my Zune. Preferably in the area where the Passenger airbag is.

I will have my TomTom behind my wheel.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I'm posting this here so that I can get some good imput and possibly some fiberglassing and custom modeling tips along the way.
I will keep this updated as I progress with my Project.

first off, if this is your first time playing with fiberglass, i do not recommend that you use this as a "learning" process. highly suggest you start out with something like the radio bezel, which you can definitely mold your xm into one of the vents, maybe some gauges.

as far as your idea, something i ran into when i did my dash, make sure that you plan everything out to come out of the car. make sure you have clearance for everything, plan everything out to the last detail before you just dive in. you also want to think about visability, being able to reach things you would typically use, such as your xm/zune.

thats just my 2 cents, and if you decide to jump in on the project good luck, if you have any questions, feel free to shoot me a line.

I might start my backseat project before I undertake this one.
I don't want to get too ahead of myself, especially since I am a noob at this.

I'm wanting something like this:

Seats

I will eventually do the front seats the same to match.
Anyone on here know of some places that could help me out?

In the NC area specifically.

I agree with ZtwatyFo..a dash is a huge undertaking for a first project. Start with the bezel, center console, gauge pods, something on a smaller scale.

Your rear seat project will involve designing custom fasteners, and maybe some trimming of the interior or the seats. There are a lot of different seats that you can fit into a J, but there is always quite a bit of work involved.
