Finally a J-body Owner (56K... uh, i wouldn't...)
Saturday, May 20, 2006 11:38 AM
Well, here she is, wrote the check today, getting it insured monday and bringing it home on thursday or friday... 87 Z24 Hatchback, what i've been looking for ever since the final J-body Bash (before it became GMSC), when i saw a perfectly preserved slate gray one...

The car is ALMOST immaculate... the interior's a little rough, but since its blue i'm doing to redo it all in black anyway, clean it up and take care of that. The digital dash is a bit iffy, sometimes works, sometimes doesn't... i think i'll be using a Pi Express Digital dash or some dakota digital gauges in a custom panel instead. As far as body goes, the corner of the hood is broken off, and there are a few scratches, and very slight surface rust on the edge of the rear wheel well. The underbody and suspension are clean as hell. All the body panels are straight, its just paint and the hood basicall. All in all, for an almost 20 year old J-body with 177K miles, i couldn't ask for better.

As for my plans for it.... tossing around ideas for the final configuration now... Paint will either be all black, red, or dark gray(no two-tone), with a 87 Z24 coupe lower valance, and probably 2nd gen Z24 side skirts, or something custom fitted. Wheels, undecided, but probably black or bronze (depending on paint choice) with a polished lip. Engine and drivetrain? Not telling until its done. Ask me, and I'll lie The car will be built primarily for performance, as if thats any surprise from me. I'd like to see an 11-second 1/4 mile from it when all is said and done, but time will tell and I won't bore you sitting here telling you what I'm GOING to do, I'll just keep you in anticipation until its DONE.

Oh and btw, i paid less than whats written on the windshield. More than what some would be willing to pay for it, but, for its condition and rarity, i knew i wasn't going to be finding a buy like this again.

This will be the ONLY time I'll ever tell someone not to mod their car. That car is in awesome condition. Leave that paint scheme, it looks good. Fix the carpet and seats and the cosmetics on the outside. You'll be much happier. Or, trade it for my fiero

this brings back some serious memories, my very first car was an 87 Hatch Z24, mine was red and silver though. I spent about a year redoing it before i got my liscense, i love that car right up until i traded it in on a Mustang GT It's great to be back to the j platform now

I'll admit as much as i want to see what would have to be done to get an eco in there... whether i go that route or no remains to be seen.... but if i did do an eco it would be a 2.2 with s/c totally worked, forged innies, ported head, cams, ported blower, 2.5" pulley, etc... If an LSJ can make 270 wheel with a 2.8 pulley and an MAFT as the only tuning tool, then i can damn sure makequite a bit more with a full standalone controlling ignition and fuel.

And to the guys who want me to keep it stock... not gonna happen. I AM trying to keep the exterior period-correct, so it will still very much look like a child of the 80's, just a much less stock one. But two tone has to go, or at least the current turqoise and silver two tone does...
