First a pic of the internal rotors comparison....
Then a comparison of the 2.4 internals to the 2.3 housing
Micrometer measurement of the 2.4
Micrometer measurement of the 2.3
Side by side
2.3 in 2.3 housing
As you can see the size differences of the 2 pumps is quite a bit. What would be required to create or modify the 2.4 pump would make a unreliable if not impossible pump due to the fact the amount of metal needed to create the same amount of volume or pressure. Even putting spacers underneath the relief valve would not work all that would cause would be airation (sp).
Might i suggest as most will on the .org to consider the 2.3 pump swap as part of any engine rebuild. I am posting this because as far as i know this hasnt been posted before and i would like everyone to see the difference in the two pumps. I would have taken a picture of the 2.4 housing but i did not have one handy (it went in the garbage where it belongs)
dude. so is it gonna be fixed for the 24th meet?
i'm baaaaack!!
DUDE YOU MISSED THE WHOLE POINT!!!!! LMAO jk man. im going to pull the oil pan this weekend so i should have it done if all goes well.
I've been suggesting this to all my 2.4 friends from the day I heard Karo and speedracerZ talking about it in a 2.4build post. Plus seeing all these 2.4s destroyed because of insufficient oiling. Yea this is considered a somewhat FIRST upgrade to any 2.4 by me.

dur. i know man. just messin with ya. haha.
i'm baaaaack!!
need to see if i smoked the oil pump
i heard on quad4forums.com that there is pump with a steal gear that are better then those with a kind of plastic gear.
anyone know whats the brand of these, how much are they and where so i find them?
thanx
yeah i got the one with the plastic gear but i want a metal gear on mine.
do you know what brands are metal gear?
Check out Melling Oil Pumps, I was showing my father the pictures from the opening post (my father being president of Melling Tool Company) and he was like oh yeah we make a ton of them. So check out Melling Engine Parts at 1.800.MELLING
Def. a HUGE difference in the 2! I will def. be checking into that conversion when I do a motor rebuild on my 2.4 this next winter!!
i have a melling right now, and the gear is plastic. after 1000 miles i have to change it. i want a metal gear for the next one!
The M-Select is their performance brand they sell. All metal I assure you that. Next year they will release 4 new products for the 2.4 I will have more information about that later.

Please give more info on this. I myself do not feel the 2.4 oil pump is so much the issue. I have owned 3-4 2.4's only 1 spun a bearing after 129k on it. I have beat on my 2.4's with no issues. I do not like the 2.3 conversion (but that is me). I think we should have a nicer easier option as far as oil pumps are concerned.

I have the JBP oil pump with the spec sheets.. My motor is fully built, so I will let you guys know how I like it because I will be pushin alot of power.. We shall see.. I for 1 also do not like the 2.3 conversion, mainly because its a damn hassle finding all the parts lol.. j/k But yea, ill write up a review on my JBP one soon.

So is the 2.3l oil pump just a direct bolt in to the bottom end? does the pump come with the housing and the start ring gear? (proper name?)

NOPE you have to drill new oil passages in the block.. Thats why its a pain.. Thats why alot of people can't and won't do it. Also there are a few other parts you need, like windage tray, and all new bolts and a filter..

A great comparison for sure, definitely shows the superiority of the 2.3's engineering over the 2.4.
As mentioned the pump isn't too great with the 2.4 in stock form but I also believe it isn't the pump that's the main reason for failure in LD9's.
Great post.

I completely agree its not only the pump but i havent done any more reasearch as to what else is causing it. i made this post in hopes of someone needing to see the difference and if on the off chance someone acutally searches once this post falls out of sight, as i will keep the pictures on the net for as long as possible.
