Well I guess I can make the official announcement finally. As of 8:32 on Saturday, June 17, 2006 Project Orange Illusions is dead. Not officially sure what happened yet but I should know before the end of next week. The best guesses we have right now are 1) Snapped rod 2) Cracked piston 3) Spun the rod bearing. Got BIG plans for the car now. I only have one part in my hands so far, my new clutch, but as parts come in and progress is made I will continue to update this thread. Stay tuned for updates and other cool stuff.
Well now on to the pictures I've taken over the last two days....
This was the sign that something was wrong. Even my girlfriend knew when she saw them and she ain't a car person YET. This is the #3 cylinder.
#4 cylinder sparkplug.
Car on lift after 2 days of working to disconnect harnesses and other crap prepping for open heart surgery.
Why would the wheel hubs be off?
To make room for 2.5 inch long ARP lug studs!
Motor coming out finally. We chose to pull it out the bottom after removing the subframe.
Motor sitting on the lift table.
Motor and transmission seperated.
Pressure plate and motor.
Flywheel contact side of the clutch disc. Still has life in it too.
Close-up of the contact surface. You can see signs of minor slippage but nothing amazingly unusual for a car running 300HP, 57000 miles and daily driven.
Pressure plate contact surface.
Flywheel contact surface.
Had to upgrade the damn stock swaybar bushings. The stock rubber ones rounded out a bit. I'm gonna make these boogers fit somehow.
First package of new parts. What could it be?
It's a SPEC Stage 3+ clutch with their lightweight option. Ordered the setup on WEDNESDAY and got it TODAY. Didn't even pay for faster shipping or anything. AMAZING SERVICE. The whole assembly weighs under 15lbs. Chose not to get their lightweight flywheel though because as you other turbo Eco guys know...first gear is hard enough to keep off the limiter with the stock flywheel. Don't need it going and kissing the limiter even faster.
What else is in the box? A nice SPEC T-shirt, XL but I'll find a way to use it, a SPEC license plate frame, and a bunch of decals.
So I've ordered over $2500 in parts in the last two days for Project Orange Illusions. Man the money goes out fast.
Parts include....Wiseco 8.9:1 compression .020 overbore pistons (Thanks Clayton), Eagle connecting rods (thanks Paco Loco), Innovate LM1 RPM kit and window mount, Level Zero Motorsports balance shaft delete kit, MSD DIS-2 Plus HO, MSD coils, MSD wires, Super 20G turbo from Hahn Racecraft, SPEC Stage 3+ clutch with their lightweight option (whole kit weighs about 15 pounds), Cometic .030 thickness headgasket, new exhaust gasket from SCE, Sparco Mugello steering wheel, Momo hub (thanks APlus!), 8 point rollcage from S&W Race Cars made from mild steel, and OF COURSE.....HP TUNERS!!! (Thanks Ron for convincing me LOL). I think that's the full list but if I remember anything else I bought I'll make sure and add it to this post.
Like I said I will have TONS of pictures and How-Tos as we go along with the rebuild.
One final picture of how the car is sitting right now.....

that sucks.. musta been from all those decals u placed on teh front end.. to much strain i guess... good luck with the build up man! feel free when breaking it in to drive it on east over to my house, so i can have a ride
Now it sounds like that you and hahn will be able to actually try and make some power now, and try and beat out jaz`s time and hp`s right.
Who wants to dig.
I bet all those stupid ass stickers messed something up. Call it car suicide if you will.
sucks it finally went, but that eco held strong for a while.
now time for it to be even better
So it looks like the eco rods can hold to about 15 psi under continued use after Airtonics lost his and now you lost your. Both we daily drivers, both driving pretty hard, and both lost a rod and then piston while at 15psi.
Looks like forgerd internals if you want to push over 15 for very long and very hard.
Good luck w / it! Rebuild it, Faster and Better than before

We have no evidence that it was a rod that snapped. In fact all of the evidence points to a spun bearing. There are NO metal shavings anywere inside the oil pan so I doubt anything actually snapped.

man more and more ecos are being built to handle lots of boost, I can't wait to see the results !! good luck man !
15.574 @ 89 mph stock without charger. new times with charger coming soon.
Well hopefully I get to find out what went tomorrow when I get to the shop. I also plan on whipping out the plasma cutter on some extra metal in the car tomorrow. It's about all I can do until I get my parts in. I'll take pics and weigh everything I cut out for y'all.

nice man it had to give at some point. im looking forward to seeing what kind of #'s you put down after all this
Well it's raining today so I don't get to do any work. I'm doing the work that I can in my spare time at the motor builder's shop so I have to stay out of the way, basically I can do anything I want as long as I do it outside. LOL. Rain kinda prevents that. Hopefully it dries out tomorrow and I can get a good 7 or 8 hours of work in before I go to my real job.
I have been asked a few times if I will be selling anything that comes off the car. The answer is yes. I don't know exactly what i'll be getting rid of yet but here is a list of things that I know/think I'll be selling...

I am NOT ripping the interior out of the car permanently though. I am just taking off all the panels to do some lightening of the car by cutting the metal behind them.

Well I know the cause but I'll post those pics tomorrow not and I'm not gonna say what it is until then. Gotta keep you guys on edge.
I got another part in today though....
Set of brand new Eagle rods courtesy of Paco Loco. I gotta give a HUGE shout out to him. I IM'd him at like 12 midnight after being directed to his classified ad. I told him I needed them ASAP but I wouldn't be able to get the money into my PayPal account for 3 or 4 days. He shipped them out the next day still. Amazing guy and a great seller.

Thinks makes alot of sense for a car that is a daily driver, and is still a unibody. Not only do you decrease the structural sterngth of the car, but if you continue to use it as a daily driver you question the safety of the vehciel by removing these pieces. The cavalier is made of inexpensive stamped panels that aren't exactly heavy gauge material. Want to know why our cars cost so much to insure, because they are designed to wrinkle up, alot, when in an accident, by decreasing the strength of those panels you jeopardize that even more.
I used to have some respect for you in the manner in which you built your car, and ran it, but by doing this I have lost all for you.
