Last week I finished installing my DevilsOwn alcohol injection kit and I thought it would be a decent time to install the 2.6" pulley I've had onto my Qwikchange hub that has been on the car for a few months. So, I go to unscrew the 5 screws and find out that two of them are seized in the hub. I decide to be careful as to not strip the screws, but it happens. I called Pulley Boys and they said that was an odd situation and they'd like for me to send my pulley/hub into them and that once received they'd send me a replacement... on my daily driver. No. So, I explain this to them and they tell me if you order the Pulley Puller and the removal plate we will put a new hub/pulley in the box as long as you return the defective hub/pulley, that's better. After getting off the phone and realizing I'm not getting anywhere with the pulley I decide to try my best and screw the screws back in... one decides to break. I call up Pulley Boys again and they say it should be fine with just four screws. Whatever.
Today, since I had received everything on Monday, I had planned on removing the old pulley/hub and installing the new one. The instructions recommend you drive the car for a bit to warm it up and then let it cool off for 30 minutes before pulling the pulley. Note, I haven't driven the car since the previous incident. So, I take it for a quick spin enduring the painful sounds the pulley is making knowing it will all be over shortly. I get home, park in the driveway and shut it off. When I killed it I heard a horrible clunking but I figured it was just the pulley because of all the noise it made during the drive. Time to wait.
Thirty Minutes Later
I go back out with all the tools and instructions in hand and to my surprise, this is what I find when I pop the hood:
No, that isn't a new low profile pulley. So I take a quick look and what is this in here?
Yup, it's definitely in the wrong spot:
So I pulled it out:
Well, that should make getting the hub off a little easier without the pulley in the way at least. So I get down to work and start moving crap out of the way so I can get the tools into position:
Then, as I'm fitting up the puller it doesn't seem to fit correctly no matter what I try. I take another quick look at the directions and I notice for the first time the label on the top for what model it's for:
I've been trying to call Pulley Boys for the past 30 minutes to find out if they did indeed send me the wrong tool or if this one should work and to find out if it should, why it isn't. I'm more than a little agitated by this point.
Wow that sucks. Hopefully everything works out for ya.
That would be hilarious if the random people on JBO now hate on pulleyboys just for this post........

Have you ever used the puller to pull their hub off? I the screws are still stuck in the hub and sticking out a bit of the back of the hub.
*Sighs* Sucks doesnt it? Hows my old car doing anyway? Any more problems with the car except your pulley boy issue?
hmm....i was able to take off the old hub without having to buy the puller.

Yea i was able to get it off with the puller.....
I would say just cut the screws off flush with the hub or cut them down as needed so that you can pull it off

I already did that and I've been tring to get the hub off but the crappy puller tool does nothing but seize up once i get so far. I got every damn peice of it coated in anti-seize but it just won't budge.
Glad to see you got it all fixed

I made a post about this over a year ago regarding my supercharger when I had it:
Thankfully, I was able to stop driving the car for a while so they could send me out a new hub.
Not sure why it happens, but there's definitely a corrosion issue. I'm stuck on the idea that it's a galling effect produced by having the two metals touch each other. I don't know though.
The whole line about heating the car up and then pulling the pulley after 30 minutes is new in the instructions. Probably a result of my own issues a year ago.

looks like a crappy fastener issue that might be exacerbated by corrosion/galling... cone-head allen screws aren't meant to be holding down parts that spin at those speeds with that kind of a load.... thats why we never use them on anything load-bearing at the plant i work at, its either hex nuts or standard allen bolts with the barrel-type head.

So True.
"Socket head cap Screws" are the proper name.
