Radio/Gauge bezel project... tryin to kill winter break..
Thursday, December 14, 2006 3:34 PM
I seem to have alot of time on my hands lately, so i've been thinking what the hell why not make something so i can whore my car up with gauges....

Snagged a bezel from a local JBO'er and bought some supplies...Who ever said to use 2" PVC couplers was a friggen moron since the gauge falls right thought them. However regular 2" PVC piping works perfectly...

Cut piping to a good lenght..

Then hack away with dremel the heater vents..

... and this kids is why you take math...or pay attention in shop class very well..

Cut out your designs....

Trim a little more and play with some epoxy and fight with the cups while the crap cures so they sit in the right position...

Test fit...

Thats all i got done for today, I have another day of nothing to do tomorrow, so i'll be back this for a few more hours... I'll post some more photo updates tomorrow evening.

C&C welcome as this is my first fiberglass project and i'm trying to not screw it up too bad.

none of them seem to be aiming at the saem area...btu otherwise good start

My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again

They actually don't sit that far out from the orginal heater vents and its just the way the camera is angle but they all are point in the same direction. I'll go get some better pics just to show...

... maybe that will help a little bit...

looks pretty sweet so far. I originally wanted to do that, but then I realized I didn't need 4 gauges so I just put one where the far left vent is. I also shaved the dimmer switch and cig lighter. You might want to think about that. It turned out pretty cool. Either way, keep us updated...I think thats going to look cool as hell with all of them aiming at you.

You dont use the couplers to mount the guages, you use the couplers to flush mount them. You lay the glass up to the coupler then the guages are inset flush.

looks good

You guys are right they may stick out a little bit sinc e i just epoxyed them in place, but i think i can still make them flow with everything. This is my first fiberglass project so if i screw it up I'm not too worried. I have alot of time on my hands and i can spend alot of time sanding and molding if i need to. Time will only tell...

its a nice start. i would suggest you just reverse the board with pvc pipes around so that the shorter end is sticking out, trimming the back parts if needed. that should be the easiest fix.

keep postin pics of this man. i love project threads.

Actually your old post was the inspiration for me to do this...

Glued the suckers in place tonight. If i flipped it around it wouldn't have fit right... so i just didn't push it as far forwards i was going to before...

Tomorrow I am going to take the filler i have which contains fiberglass and says can be used patching 1" holes and start forming a base and shape the pods depending on how fast this stuff dries. Before anyone asks no i am not leaving it like that either. I am only using the filler to shape a base since the angles i have with them tilted this way are so sharp I want to get then uniform. Then i am going to be using the fiberglass cloth over that for the strength that it needs. I have been reading up on fiberglassing and I know you can't just use plain body filler.....

just make sure you sand the crap out of the whole area around it and drill a ton of holes when you FG cause its gonna crack if you dont!

IM SHOCKED! THAT NO ONE ON THIS SITE HAS GOTTEN ALL OVER YOUR ASS AND TOLD YOU THAT YOU GOT THE WRONG FG AND FILLER

I thought there is only fiberlgass cloth and mat? I have both of them, and i know i do not have the right finishing body filler yet. The stuff i do have it just being used to form a molded base like i have said previously.

personally... i wouldnt have gone with 4 guages, maybe not even 3. IMO its going to look gaudy. but, nice work all the same man, it looks like it will be neat when its finished and painted, just not my cup O tea.
