Sweetness: MKII

Well... what can I say... here I am doing the same thing again, only this time around things are about as on time as I can hope for.

Late last November I had a disagreement with my thermostat - I wanted it to function properly and it wanted to stick shut when I wasn't looking - sadly the thermostat won.

It's victory? A warped and twisted head, 5 burned exhaust valves, 2 destroyed pistons, 4 sets of melted rings, 4 seized full floating wrist pins, a flattened set of main bearings, a blown headgasket and an engine that was dead on the side of the 401.

Wouldn't you believe it... I know I didn't at first.

Mev @ JBP did me a huge favour and took the motor, and fixed it for me... amongst all new parts to replace the above came a new engine gasket set, machining to the head, 3 angle valve job, valve seats machined, polished combustion chambers, re-porting of the head, rebalance to the rotating assembly, motor bored 0.030 over, heat treatment to the cylinder walls, ceramic coating to the pistons and engine assembly.

Basically everything I had before with a few minor improvements...

Sweetness lived a very short life with her new and fancy motor... and I have to say it's almost unbelievable that a $11 part almost gutted her on the 401 Eastbound... but I guess every Goliath has his David.

With all that said, please enjoy these photos taken the past few days as I have assembled the new and rebuilt heart of a car that I often feel never gives itself a chance... this is it's last chance because after this I'm just out of patience!

Tomorrow I hope to drop the engine in, and sometime between then and next week I hope to start it up and make sure all is well.

On that day, Sweetness MKII will be born. I hope to have her at the bash for everone - myself included - to enjoy.

New coil setup courtesy of Team Green and Wrench Monkey

Sure looks big hangin off the back of the motor like that!

Still lookin' good even after 3 seasons (of limited use lol)

Spark plug wires run for new coil setup

Freshly painted 2.3 H.O Intake Manifold

View of interior - wireless steering wheel controls for aftermarket deck and wireless Greddy Profec B high/low boost button... took a lot to get all that stuff wireless!

Better shot of coils installed with everything else mocked in around it

And the money shot...

Please keep in mind the IDI cover is temporary as my custom one is being polished.

That's all for now, I'll get pics as it goes in and pics once it's in and running.

Good / bad comments welcome.

Ohhhh Chris....even though I have been along for the ride and kept day to day basis, it is a beautiful to see that engine and another sign of hope. PS, minus the painted black timing chain cover....and mine being polished...we have the exact same looking motor, haha. It will look much better with a polished aluminum intake mani...wonder where that is coming from???

I assume you were driving the car when this happened (from the way it was posted), did you not see the temps going up?? I would have shut the car down.

Good stuff Chris. Glad to see everything coming together. I hope we get it started tonight!! Yet another Friday night spent in your garage in hopes of hearing that engine roar!

Glad to see you held in there and were persistant and didn't give up hope (Even though I would have about 2-3 years ago!)

At the speed I was going at to be honest John I was watching the road... 20 psi of boost plus lead foot = watch road... sadly this thing overheated in the span of 20-25 seconds.

Honestly it happened extremely quickly... the damage wasn't immediate... I shut it down as soon as I saw it but.... it was warped... (unbeknownst to me)... 2 days later on the highway it misfired horribly accellerating on the highway... what felt like a stumble was really detonation - middle two cyls survived due to headgasket leaking into them once the car heated up, outer cyls detonated.

Not much I can do but fix it and forget about it.

To the question as to when it hits 500 magical HP... honestly... no claims this year If I can get to it I will get to it, I'm really busy and in all honesty 4 years without my car is enough I just wanna drive it a bit.

Thanks all for the comments.

So... are you even planning to run a thermostat this time around? I'm guessing this won't be your daily driver/winter car, so why not eliminate that possibility again...

It's my daily driver and I drive it well into November here in Canada... it has a drilled 180 degree thermostat in it... brand new.

It was my own stupidity for not using a new thermostat when I put the motor in I used my old one and just left it in my toolbox - had no idea you had to keep it in coolant.

Hard lesson to learn.

I see. I knew you were in CA, I just figured with the other cars in your registry you had something else to peddle around in.

Sorry you had to deal with that. Hard lessons (ie the ones where you knew better in the first place, but didn't follow your instinct) are the worst one's to deal with.

(btw, this reminds me... gotta take out my thermostat. )

I'm in Canada, and I drive it into November just to enjoy it. I have a beater that I've been in for the past 6 months and I'm sick of the lack of power in a 2.2 and I HATE the isuzu in that car... lol

I'm sorry I had to deal with it too but them's the breaks eh?
