I'm sorry if this has been dug up before, but I came across this brochure in the literature collection where I work in the "concept car" section, and I thought it was worth sharing.
The brochure was supposedly released in 1990, which puts it five years before the Sunfire's public release. I'd say they ended up setting their sights quite a bit lower. I wonder if the prototype pictured was ever made in a drivable state, or might still be around someplace.

I'm so happy that didn't go into production

Yep. those are def. ugly Ass Pontiac Interior Buttons. Glad to see they saved those for production!

I rather like the overall styling myself. Maybe use some more conventional wheels, and try not to make it look like a toddler with a bucket full of Pontiac plastic buttons and paste was loosed on the interior, but otherwise I must say I like what I see.

I still have the odd post around here. I just don't haven't had any "thread starter" material lately. Stupid head gasket comes before other purchases.

If there was one thing they would have kept, it should have been the engine...
fawk, that is an ugly car. can you imagine trying to use that amazing "steering wheel pod" without slamming into the nearest parked car. seems silly to me, they could have fit another 10 or 12 buttons on there easily. And i guess i just don't really understand the rear seat, looks like a porta potty toilet seat from hell.
And why did they have fatter tires on the rear, when its fwd?
i kinda like it, even though its quite odd!
Carbon fiber body panels, ABS disc brakes, 19" front and 20" rear tires, independent suspension, and a 2.0 liter turbo engine? If they actually applied most of their ideas to what they made it might have sold alot better.

Fugly inside and out and probally slow as B@#%s. lol
It looks nice as a "concept" but not for me, it looks quite weird and obscure. prob wouldn't have gotten a Sunfire if that was the production car. Their is way too much going on in that car.
id say ugly but ahead of the times. when did all the other cell phone for cars and returning seats come in to play? id say they had the right track just failed miserably in the function placement and looks category.
19 and 20 inch low profile tires back in the 1990's? 16's were considered big back then. I bet a replacement tire would have cost a crap load of money at that time.
turbocharged. 19s in front. 20s in back << best parts about it. for a 1990 concept though i cant say im not impressed. craazzyy stuff.
I still wish Pontiac had put the Banshee into production
That car isn't so bad on the outside. Maybe in a different color and wheels that don't look like gas stove burners it may look a bit better.
i can't believe carbon fiber existed back then? u guys are talking about the rims....... f-that. carbon fiber body panels! that is just jaw dropping!

Hey man, It was only the 90's. Your makin' me feel real old.
I think the quadcoupe doors are neat. Makes you wonder how fro forward car designers work onto the future. Many of the feature on this car are standard fair today.
God.. those buttons.. fail..
Kinda bringin back an old post, but I just saw this car on a website and was gonna post a new thread, but found this one so I decided to rant here. Its funny the Sunfire ended up being considered an average "econobox" when it came from something so advanced for its time. I just wish they kept the doors. Its crap they skipped ours and put it on a Saturn...
