So I had a thread for the parts that I got and pics of the kit and we finally got started on the install at Skunks house the other day, there were a lot more problems than expected, So I had to come home from Illinois unboosted, but not without progress, the kit will get a working downpipe and tune aound the 29th-31st when he comes to town so im hoping to have the kit done before a local club meet. Either way, on with what we got done..
** The black headlights need some major adjusting, I just got them and havent had a chance to set them yet.
FIrst we got battery tray out by drilling out the welds, and installed the FMIC, HO manifold and 390s..
Thats all we got done on day one, since I got there late and there ws other stuff going on tht night.
In the morning we tried this cold side piping.. I dont think its gonna work like this ( This is why Curt needs two cups of coffee before work )
Also, I didnt get the bracket for the HO mnifold and TB so had nothing to connect throttle cable to, looks like ill need to find the bracket for that, so stock manifold went back on, and we finished the piping on the cold side.
Thats when we ran into a major issue... the turbo manifold wont clear the auto trans with the manifold location.. so it looks like ill need to take the stock turbo manifold, cut off the part tht attaches to the head, turn the manifold 180 degrees, and reweld it so the flange is off the correct cylinders.. that should provide enough clearance for the turbo, but I had to come back to indy for that, so we put the AEM intake back on and so that was the end of the trip for now but we got a really good idea of what else needs done,
Ben ( JonSilveronenines) and I are gonna pull the AC stuff out, get the manifold rewelded, run the hot side piping and get things ready for Curt when he to Indy at the end of the month, and we are gonna make a working downpipe since mine wont clear the auto Trans or the 5 bolt housing wont line up the DP, so that needs reworked, but should be boosted by the end of the month. As I get more done I will get more pics up!
I will have the trunk setup done and battery box mounted, and hopefully gauges in tomorrow, depends on my mood, but heres a teaser pic of how it sits now with the FMIC still installed just pipes arent going anywhere right now.

Sux that you couldnt get it done, Im sure it will get done soon though.
I really wish you would have notched the re-bar a little and raised the intercooler up to line up with the opening in the bumper though.
Yeah coffee is my friend and my creative juices weren't flowing yet lol.

I can notch it, thats not a big deal, I didnt really think about it
Thats a good idea though..
Well wish we could have caught the manifold thing once your creatie juices started flowing yesterday

It's not that it won't work, after looking at pics of your's and shifted's setups I see it. I was thinking that it would have to be like bonnet's old setup w/ the turbo off of cyl 2. For some reason this car stumped me from start to finish last weekend. I can't wait to get another shot at it in a couple weeks. Maybe because I have not worked on a ld9 in ages and it was the unfamiliarity w/ the engine and all the different setups and where stuff is. Either way after seeing it I now know where I was wrong in saying that it wouldn't fit. It's gonna be tight near the brake booster for the down pipe but it'll fit.

Why you guys mounting the turbine housing on the drivers side?
icemike89 wrote:Why you guys mounting the turbine housing on the drivers side?
The way I was looking at it at first it was going to be similar to the hahn setup w/ the compressor on the dr side. After seeing a few others and even looking at my own for an extended period of time after Jeff left I saw how it had to be done, for some reason I had a mental block that wasn't allowing me to see it when he was hear. All will be corrected in due time. I hate my brain sometimes, it just shuts down and I can't see the blatently obvious.

Hmm keep us updated with pics, id like to see the trouble spots of fitting the turbo that your having(unless its solved already lol) You should be able to mount the turbo anyway you want really.. On mine the compressor is on the drivers side.. The only problem we had is putting a filter on it. But solved that with welding a 90* elbow up to clear the brake booster.
Keep us updated im sure you guys will figure it out.

most LD9 setups ive seen have the compressor side by the brake booster.
Alright, well I guess we have a good setup in mind now.. must have overlooked some things, but if i do have any questions ill get ahold of you david.. if thats ok ? Since my setup will be pretty similar to yours and we have the same motor/trans
.
.
I had planned to run everything pretty much just like David, I removed my a/c for the charge piping and all.
Did you get the oil lines mocked up yet?
You can use the 2.4 cable bracket with the 2.3 manifold. Its not perfect but works.

I have seen must LD9's with the downpipe on the driver's side. That is how the SpeedCraft kit is/was. Works fine with a auto, and could do A/C.
FU Tuning
officially worst progress thread so far.
