Got a box today
Checked it out with one of my dogs
What do you know, a new intake!
This is what happened to the old one:
When this happens while you were driving, there's a pretty good banging on the hood & a wicked shake in the brake pedal. It was on my car since February 2002 & was replaced under warranty. They actually wanted to know why it broke, so they paid the postage & it was returned to their research & development crew. Pretty cool move IMO, they could just not give a crap and keep making them the same way.
This isn't the most exciting post, but it's not often I do anything car related besides oil changes. Even those are few & far between anymore
At least it was free! That's impressive, I was going to bitch if you paid for the "AEM"!
It's pretty obvious a little stress on that tiny bracket/engine vibes/filter weight/positioning too all play a role. I've seen many break in the same spot.
link to pix of your car please. i keep seeing it in your sig
congrats on the replacement part
I've had 3 k&n short ram intakes and they have all broken in that exact spot. I'm done messing with it; zipties ftw.

Funny too the AEM sticker on the old one was on the underside, but I don't remember seeing one on the new one at all. They don't really mark their product
The positioning on this thing is so touchy, it has to be in the exact perfect spot or it bangs on the hood & I've even got the upper mount insert to try to hold it a little more still!

Yikes! How often are you replacing them?
oh god that is a beautiful car :|
id be more worried about the intake arcing on the positive battery post again.... where's your stock red plastic cover?
personally i dont see how they could break there as easily as people have seen theres do it. ive twisted my AEM trying to get it to stop either rubbing on the hood or rubbing on the brake booster plastic so many times it technically should have snapped in two by now.
a friend had the ebay special one on his grand am forever and it never broke either...

She has an extended battery bolt that is used to power her neons under the dash. As such the stock battery cover doesn't fit. The bolt is too long. I've since trimmed that down a bit so it won't be hitting on the new pipe. Never noticed a problem with arcing, it was just wearing away at it.
my Injen short ram intake broke there and i had my friend weld it back togather no problems yet
-I had one on my first cav that I traded for the current cav (didn't mess with changing it)
-Bought my first k&n for this car a like 2 years ago, it broke after about a year
-Got a new tube from k&n (for free), and it broke 6 months later.
6 months now since the last one broke, and i am done messing with it like i said, ziptied it up and its good.
i love what you did to your taillights! great idea
i wouldn't change a thing on the outside of that car!!
i'm a fan now
i put washers on mine go to lowes u can get them in stainless steel they have a wide variety of small dia through holes and large dia on the outside dia.and the stainless looks nice also gives more of an area to lock down on man.....mine never had a problem when i had my cav.......thought i throw that out there for u......

Good fix! My brother welds, had it not been replaced for free, I probably would have asked him to fix it.

Damn! As long as they hold it where it needs to be, that works. Not sure that would work for mine since it really needs to be in an exact spot, or there are problems.

Thank you
The tails are one of the things I wouldn't do again if I did it all over. The guy that did them did an amazing job, they've been on there through all sorts of snow & ice, year round since around spring of 2003 with no signs of peeling. I kind of want to go back to stock, but don't want to peel the vinyl off since it is such a good job. Oh, and I feel like a douche with a WS6 in the driveway now

So you put a washer behind it too? There's one in the front, right next to the nut. They sent new hardware, it's in the little bag laying next to the intake & in there is just a new washer & nut. But if you say that you put one behind there for some reason, I may give it a shot.
i've had my k&n for 4 years now! still strong!
congrats on the freebie!
