Z24 Bearing Spun!!!
Wednesday, February 04, 2009 3:33 PM
This is what i have been up to the past 2 days.
My buddy has a 96 z24 with 170xxx miles on it! And was hard driven most of its life. Here is what it looks like as of now It spun a rod bearing
Excuse the picture quality it is from a cell phone.
Funny thing is the oil was just changed 43miles ago!

Here is the mysterious peice we found along with lots of bearing shavings inside the oil pan..
If anyone knows where this goes or what it is.. Please let me know hhahah

i wouldnt be discouraged..... beating the hell out of it for most of its 170,000 mile life means it lasted real good.

do a 2.3 oil pump swap and spun bearings should be a thing of the past.

Needing 2.3 oil pump stuff? PM me...

Yup. we are going to measure out the crank and order bearings!!! We took apart the oil pump and checked all the clearences of the gerotor and its all good! So were just waiting to figure out where this goes. LOL

I told you this above. If you don't trust me put that to the end of his dipstick(no pun here, but sounds funny) and see if it matches up. You need to order a new dipstick from the dealer. It comes with the gasget I know for sure.

Its very common for them to break there. I just use RTV on mine now.

I wouldn't RTV it cause it is like 15-20 bucks to fix. Nothing like a piece of metal in the pan if it ever falls off again. Just about everyone that does a header on a 2.4 brakes it taking it out .

With as often as my dipstick tube comes out I would go through 2-4 a year. I just put the tube back in with RTV. Never said anything about putting the small broken piece back in. Why should I spend $15 on a new tube when I have an open tube of RTV already in front of me?

Re: Z24 Bearing Spun!!!

I thought you where tryin' to hold both parts together with RTV! I guess that could work since it is bolted in up top, but I just didn't trust it to do for my car to maybe loss of pressure

I have blow out the o-ring several times, the RTV never failed.

That is not a fix for that. There have been cases with the 2.3L oil pump and spun bearing. But the 2.3L pump will take care of issuses if you plan on passing the 6500 redline.

Well as for the 2.3 oil pump were not going to do that he doenst have money for it Thats why were just replacing the bearings Not my way to do things but thats all he has the money for right now. The crank is in pretty damn good condition! Very little imperfections can bearly feel anything with my finger nails. It all measured out in spec with the micrometer. As for the dip stick i dont see that the broken piece serves as.

We got the bearings ordered up! only 68bux all the journals measured out to spec WOOT only bad thing is the 3rd journal has little imperfections in it. So persionally i wouldnt reuse the crank without machning but he doesnt have the money at the moment So were just going to give it a shot and when it fails again in a couple thousand miles he will have the money to do it right!

*Update*
We decided to actually get a new crank So now heres a question for everyone. Have you ever tried to pull the 2.4 with autotranny out without taking the trans out? It looks do-able. Or did you just take them out together out the top?

Yes, ive taking my 2.4 out 2 times with the auto tranny still in. Very easy. Just sucks getting it back in because of all the hidden tranny to block bolts. Nothing but a couple hours, not too bad.
