Project Ressurection
Saturday, March 07, 2009 7:45 PM
This has been a long time project for me, but I've made some decent progress in the last year, and I'm finally sharing it with JBO. Any opinions/comments welcome. Here's what I started out with:

This is what the car looked like after I bought her the 02 Sunfire she now claims as hers. And it is, because this car will be better than her Fire anyway.HAHA
Then this happened shortly after we put the KYB Gr2's and 1.75" Megan Racing lowering springs on...

It was way worse than that, a buddy of mine wanted to get the deepest pars out of it. He did, and that's what I ended up with. A deer collided with me on my way home. But this is where I'm at now.

And this is the list of parts I have for this:
control arm bushings
trans mount bushings (both urethane)
RK Sport lower dogbone engine mount
RK Sport upper engine mount
Upper and Lower engine mount brackets
TTR lower subframe K Brace
2.2L Ecotec complete engine
Clevite "H" rod bearings
GM Main Bearing set
Hydraulic chain tensioner
Water pump drive gear
JEGS Battery Relocator kit
Ferrea 1MM OS SS Valves (Intake and Exhaust)
Ferrea Titanium Retainers (8)
Custom Made Neutral Balance Shafts (mild steel)

So yea, I've been slowly collecting parts here and there to whip this project into shape. I am still on the hunt for the parts needed for the Eco swap, and good deals on engine parts. But my plan is for 400-500 horse with the M62 blower. So yea, stay tuned as I make progress over the summer.

Photos soon to come. Just today I got the first half of the ARP Main studs I ordered. Turns out, when you order custom hardware from ARP, you gotta buy it all individual. Ah well, I'm making progress. I will have some time on Saturday to finish removing the control arms and get ready to r&r the bushings. Thinking I might replace the ball joints and wheel bearings while I'm at it. But I gotta figure out a way to support the engine while I get the tranny out of it. Other than that, might have it ready to run before June/July. Hopefully. I'll keep you updated.

that supercharger won't push that much power lol, you'd need a turbo for the lofty goal of 4-5 hundred horses

Fire is gone unfortunately! Parts 4 sale, look in Mid-Central...

I'll be adding photos this weekend. If I use the right pulley, with the .060" Cometic head gasket, the work I've done on the head, and 10:1 compression, with water/meth and possibly nitrous, and an excellent tune, anythings possible.

not saying the car will not be a beast with your current plans, but the numbers are just not realistic for the build your planning just is not going to happen.

Its possible, but you'll have to use at least a 150hp shot of nitrous on build thats better than Airtonics. Im going to be shooting for "high" hp numbers and "low" ET's with a S/C once i build myself an eco and im not even that hopeful for 500whp. Also LSJ guys are touching 400hp with the Harrop, not the M62.

Dont skimp on the cooling mods....

Didn't plan on it. Griffin radiator w/ dual fans, hadn't done any looking on the heat exchanger, but was going to look into a bigger one than the cobra. Plus looking into building a CO2 sprayer kit for the exchanger and something in the charge pipe, just a thought. Well, also found out just tonight the S/C kit is no longer avaiable through GM, but I'll stay optimistic about finding a used kit or just buying the parts one by one. Who knows, maybe I'll end up turbo'd, kinda holding off until the engine's built. Either way the engine's going to be built for boost. Thanks for the feedback guys. Keep it coming.

Well, here's where I'm at with the engine

I cut the EGR tube off my head to make room. What I ended up doing was plugging the port on the ex manifold side of the head with a 1/4" pipe plug so exhaust wouldn't leak out of the head.

Like so, and this is what my exhaust ports look like. Smooth all the way to the throat. And that what the throats and seats look like after grinding them for the 1MM oversize valves. Well the one intake on the left side.

And this is what I did to all the counterweights on the crank. I finally wrapped that up this week. I have all the bearings and half the main studs, I'm about halfway from having the bottom end buttoned up!

Comments welcome.

To be perfectly honest, 400-500 horse was a goal. If I make it, allright. If not, oh well. I'm just going to build it and see what happens when I get it dyno'd.

Not to knock on your skills, but are you going to get the rotating assembly balanced? If you did that yourself to the crank im not sure how precise you actually had it and you might run into problems. Getting the rotating assembly balanced would be a very good investment.

Allready planned on it, just because I knew doing this to the crank would cause the stock balance to be out of whack. Plus, will have to be done with the addition of the ATI superdamper and SPEC flywheel.

Thanks ZtwatyFo, i plan on keeping this updated as it get put together.

Khanduras, thanks for pointing that out....didn't even realize. Ah well, it happens.

So yea, I got a set of Eagle rods for cheap. Brand new, in the box. Plus I scored an 03 LS Sport rear bumper for a case of Fosters...ain't complainin a bit. The bumper cover was in really nice shape to begin with.

The progress on my head is almost done as well, have some finer port work to do, but got the seat work wrapped up and shaved .005"+ off the surface of the head, figured it would be nice to have a shorter combustion chamber considering all the work I did to polish them. Now, just gotta get some parts collected to wrap this up and I can get serious on the bottom end. Going to see how it will fit into my budget, but I'd like to machine it for the Darton sleeve kit. Just knowing that the block will be strong enough to handle whatever I could throw at it. And if I felt like it, I could get more power out of it.

So yea, that's where I'm at.

you've got more bawls than me to be knife-edging your crank yourself like that LOL.

any idea how much weight was removed?

zyaaaa- Not really sure, I did weight it overall on a scale when I was half way done and it was showing like 2 pounds....but I didn't really believe it. I'll know exactly when it gets balanced.

Resurrected J- Sorry man, but as you can see I needed a dictionary, our spellings are different, so could you cut me some slack? lol!!!

Thanks for the comments guys...I'll get more pics over the week so you guys get the full effect.

Looking forward to more pics.....If I get off my ass I'll start posting up install on my LSS...I ordered a bigger heat exchanger and plan on selling my cobra h/e. Airtonics posted his "ice box" for his eaton and I'm tossing the idea of moving the battery to the trunk and making a battery sized coolant res. that uses the battery hold down to mount it in the car.... but time will tell, I have little time as it is with school work, etc etc.....

Let me know if your looking for any parts in particular and I'll keep an eye out for ya.

Re: Project Ressurection

Sounds like a decently put together build so far, been working with the M62 for 2 1/2 years I can tell you 4-500 whp wont be available with that blower. not trying to be negative just knowing that with all the bolt ons, cooling mods, meth, pistons headwork etc just the number 300 alone with that charger is a milestone. Yeah with nitrous you could hit it all day long, but the m62 is a HEATBOX as you start dropping pulley sizes even with meth, larger front mount, dual pass intercooling kits etc. Then you also run into the problem over over spinning the blower putting it out of its efficiency ( spelling? lol ) range, then if you get into porting it, if not done right ( which just happened on css.net ) you can actually end up farther back then where you were with a stock blower. Best route IMO is turbo. they run cooler, and you can get more power out of them then the m62. Hope this helps some and goodluck with your build.

Jeff-Thanks man. If I'm looking for anything in particular, I'll keep that in mind.

CarbonCavi-Thanks for the input. I'm not the kind of guy to take critizm as flaming. I just put my goals up and if other guys tried and failed, it's good to get feedback. I'd rather not get too deep into it and regret all the time and work to have to start over.

As far as forced induction, I'm still not sure. The engine's a long way from being finished yet, and I'm working to find a good core to get the Eco swap done ASAP!

And this past weekend, I started fitting the 03 LS Sport rear bumper cover on my 01 and having a little bit of trouble. The tabs on the top that go over the main part of the bumper, can I just cut them off, or do I have to swap my 00-02 bumper padding for 03+?

The removal of the LN2 should start this weekend, I want to get the trans mount bushings and get the control arm bushings installed this weekend. Plus get the bumper cover on and get the car driveable again.

And to all asking, I've have photos up this weekend, I hit a few dead ends tonight. My light stand has two burnt bulbs now, the first one popped Friday night, the last one tonight. And I need to charge batterise for my digital camera, so trying to get anything tonight wasn't happening. I'll keep you guys posted and any comments/feedback welcome.

I like your way of going about things. you have a good head on your shoulders when it comes to a project. if you are serious about doing the blower tho the TVS and Harrop 1320s are direct bolt on replacements for us LSJ guys for the M62. Im un nowledged as far as whats involved to make it fit on a 2.2 eco but if you guys can get the M62 to fit im sure it cant be too much harder if at all to get the bigger blowers to fit. from there you could probably get an easier 400 out of it hp wise i would think.

Yea, like I said, I'm not 100% set on the blower, but I'm thinkin that the way I'd like to go, just for ease of tuning. I want to get the engine built first, get it in the car and broke in, then start adding boost! But I always do my research before I get too deep into a project. I want it done right the first time, no matter what it takes. I won't skimp on anything. But I'm heading to Hudson to get some hardware and get this project rolling again. I'll have pics up late today. And Thanks Carbon Cavi, all the info I can get will be all the more helpful.

I'll be back!

OK, not that I had a productive day on the car, but woke up around noon, and ran to Hudson to pick some necessary crap up for getting this train a rollin'!

I got this pipe from evilmonkitar, as he didn't need it after the S/C install, I plan on fabbing it to work when I do my Eco swap. I had been wondering if it would fit in a pre 03 J, and sure enough it does. NOTE:To those that knew this allready, don't flame me.

Minus the cat, this a shot of my head. I spent a lot of lunch hours trying to wrap this up and finally got it done last week. The seat work involved with going from STD to 1MM OS was a pain on the intakes, but not so bad on the exhaust. Why you ask? Because Ferrea makes these valves with a .020" longer stem tip. The length from the valve face to the first keeper groove it the same as stock. Now, I was planning on using this to my advantage on the intake side, but had cut the first 2 seats down just a tad beyond stock valve installed stem height, so I'll have to remove the .020" from them. But I am going to use that to my advantage on the exhaust. And setting up to shave the head was simple, I just didn't feel too comfortable with taking a lot off, so I stopped at only .005".

Now, this is the tab I'm asking about for the 03 LSS rear bumper install. Can I just cut that off, or will it fit around the bumper itself without any issues? And, I also realized my bumper mounting brackets won't fit on it. So I won't be able to bolt them on until I get the right ones ordered. If anyone's got a part number, I'd be greatly appreciative and if not, no big deal.

And I started fiddling around with the battery relocator kit. Check out these next few pics.

The old hole for the filler panel plate is going to be used for the battery ground. I figured I'm allready drilling new holes in the body as it is, no sense in drilling more. I would have either had to fill them with silicone or weld or something to plug them both, now I'll only have to plug one.

I also removed the hood today. It needed to go so I can start pulling this slug of an engine, and get it ready for the stronger, much more responsive Ecotec it deserves. So yea, that's where I'm at for today. I've still got a few things to get yet and I'll get more done. I'll keep ya posted. Comments welcome and thanks for reading.
