RD Fabs Ecotec Supercharged Cold air intake.

First off I would like to thank strongEco (strongz24) "Jim" for stepping up and making the 5+hour drive from his home to our shop so we could finally fabricate this sucker. Thanks again to you Jim and your son for coming and spending your day with us.

This will be added to our website in the next couple of days for ordering. If there is enough interest by people we would also consider an group purchase on them feel free to contribute in this thread and post your interest there.

It has to go from 3" to 2.5" to fit down threw the hole where the stock intake goes threw. The 3" tube requires the hole to be enlarged to fit. By reducing it, it makes it a 100% bolt on mod(no cutting required).

Wow, about time!

....IMO though it looks rather generic compared to adapting the AEM per-say. Not knocking RD, the piping's finish is beautiful. It's the couplers and way it's ran. Sure some will understand what I'm saying.

now i do appreciate a direct bolt on part... but at the sake of performance value.. who cares? if you can install a supercharger you can certainly make a hole larger.

To fit through the fender well hole. The opening is a smidge over 3" and when you fabricate all of these parts by hand being dead on every time is something we stride for, but things can shift while welding and instead of having an unhappy customer we kept to our normal design. I had to have this intake created before Jim came so we wouldn't be keeping him all day when it was a long drive home for him. We needed his car for bracket fitment placement and since I didn't know where that was doing due with my angles. Also upon his arrival the space between the TB and battery was tighter than I anticipated this also through me curve. Another reason I had to leave it downsized slightly, If I hadn't the whole thing wouldn't have worked. These intakes take a good straight 8-10hours or so to go from scratch to finish product.. There would have been no way I could have whipped up another one in a timely manner So instead of sacrificing our reputation, we downsized it for ease of installation through the fender well hole and it gives a safety cushion if something arouse in the process. In the end everyone is happy.

When I get more time and if I do end up having to keep my supercharger, I will take the time and figure out if I can get a 3" all the way through in there. Its just extremely difficult to do the narrow clearance and the protruding battery hook up posts. The loss from the downsized tubing is very minimal anyways. Still will have a greater gain over the factory air box setup supplied with the Supercharger kit.



Edit: As for customers who want this is 3" all the way through and are willing to cut their fender liners we'd be more than happy to make them all 3" all the way through. But from what we've experienced, not many people are willing to cut into the metal on their cars. But if you want them, we'll do them.

Why does the 3 inch pipe go so far back before going around the battery? Maybe its the pics, but it seems that you could have run it alot closer to the battery.

My comment was directed towards the appearance, as honestly, it looks like a couple pieces of random coupled together with no real design. I'm not being a dick, but to pop a hood and see it, that would be my initial thought.

Doesn't the AEM use 2 3/4" piping, why not settle on the happy medium there between the two above?

90* Stainless steel tubes make it go that far back. The mounting bracket on the PS pump is welded dead on the weld line. The POS battery terminal requires for clearance that it be that high above it. So unfortunately due to 3" SS tubing, that is the quickest angles made. I've tried to make it shorter but its just not possible to keep everything clean.

If it weren't for the fuse block, and battery location life would be a lot easier.

We can't get 2 3/4" surgical grade tubing through our source. Only by 1/2 increments. 2", 2.5", 3", etc... other wise it most likely would be in 2 3/4". We'd have to second source it and that would only drive costs up higher.

Like I stated above, if purchasers want it all in 3", we will do it for them as long as they don't complain to us if it doesn't go through the hole without some required trimming. My old 2200 intake was 3" straight through, but I opened up my hole into the fender. A hole saw will do wonders

Its hard to please everyone. Without having a car in the shop and trying to fabricate something for it, is pretty much going in blind. If we could have had his car for the whole day, it might be even different looking that the current setup. But like mentioned due to the time restraints, close proximity of the TB to the battery it really limits what can be achived with the battery in the stock location. Not everyone wants to do a relocation of their battery or wants to cut into their car. If you guys don't like the design that is fine, to each your own and I do appreciate your comments. It helps us know what you'd like to see improved down the road.

aem figured out how to make it not only look good but fit decent and maintain the same size piping.

He's saying due to the time constrains this is what they came up with. I'm sure if they put more time into it would look and fit better.
Aem already had an intake made for the ecotec and they still wanted a test vehicle for something, they used my car for the whole day.

wow a bunch of asses in here... rd goes and makes a quality product and look what happens... a bitch fest...

AEM does NOT use surgical grade Stainless Steel, they use thin walled aluminum... Durability RD wins hands down.. plus AEM and whomever other PROFESSIONALLY OWNED business have gobbs of time to figure out fitment issues...

I think it looks simple, clean and will get the job done.....

I will point out this is an air intake!

Not denying the SS isn't quality, doesn't look great, nor is durable, but the argument here...............seriously?

There truly is no need for an argument as these are opinions. The truth resides that this is a 90' SS elbow with a bracket added on simply with their standard CAI extension found on the other intakes. The R&D here didn't take much more than an Eco with an M62.

The above doesn't look like RD Fabs work that one will pay for, it could be created with a cheap "cold air intake piping kit" and a piece of hose.

IMO.

i also agree. the AEM is cheaper and also looks nice than these. its the only thing i dont like about RD Fabs intakes is that you have to use couplers to couple things together. it looks cheap and as said above. thrown together. not to mention the price is outrageous for an intake that gets seen very little.
