Does just adding a muffler work?
Tuesday, February 15, 2005 7:26 PM
i was just wondering how restrictive the stock muffler is? Is there any point to just change the muffler or should i wait and just go 2 1/2 inch all the way back?

muffler aint gonna do anything. if the exhaust is restricted at any point thru the system, it is restricted to that size. so say u have a stock pipe, all your gonna get is a louder exhaust. i would say if there is ANY gain at all, its prolly .5hp

save yourself the time and money and just get a cat-back

What car are you doing this too and engine and is is auto or 5spd,

eather way I wouldn't fo with 2 1/2 unless you plan to go F/I in the future,
I would go with 2-1/4in.

depending on which setup you go, it may be cheaper to just buy a muffler and get the piping made from the cat back. thats what i did and it didnt cost too much. i paid 50 for a muffler and 125 to get 2 1/4" pipe bent from the cat back

you paid only $175 for the whole exhaust? how does that sound and what agins did you get....was it stainless piping and was it manderalk bend.......

spending less then $200 on something like exhaust wouldn't give me piece in mind, but if you like the sound and got some gain from it then that awesome......

of course you'll get some slight gain, but not nearly as much as if you redo the entire exhaust from the header back. it doesn't do as much to open one area up wider if the rest is still restrictive. i did change my stock muffler to an aftermarket one, and i noticed a slight difference. but not very much.

It is a 5 speed.... what size is stock pipe it loks around 2inch...maybe a bit smaller? i havent takin a look at the down pipe before the cat is it the same as the rest??? because it wouldnt make much sence to just do from the cat back if its restricted before it...i might be putting a s/c on it i'm not sure yet...i don't want a loud exhaust just good free flow....

also just remember...the amount that you exhaust also has to do with the moutn you take in....so if you do 2.5 out you should also up the amt coming in...ie intake, larger tb...something like thatr

to go along with cannon fodder, just having a cat back system probably wont give you a noticable gain. It will help with air flow slightly, but if you think about it, the same amount of air is still coming through. If you want to see how restrictive it really is, go to the performance forum and search for a post about down pipe size, there is a picture of a cavalier down pipe and its interior diameter is far less than half an inch. so in short, a cat back will help, but there are a lot more mods that should be done if you expect any serious gains

If you do go cat-back, 2 1/2 is to big unless you are gonna run FI, 2 1/4 is the biggest you should go right now.

yea it sounds great. it was all done by a local muffler shop where i live. they did it for me while they had a rented bay at a repair shop so i got it pretty cheap. its stainless steel piping and im not sure how they bent it, i dropped my car off and within a few hours it was done. like i said it sounds great and they did a good job

Ok I just wanted to throw in a smart thing I was told once about exhaust.

Theres a pretty decent amount of exhaust pushing through your pipes and it
needs to flow right. This is what I was told once and it made great sence to me...

.. in your house when you have a window open upstairs and you go to walk outside
and open your door you feel a draft. Depending on how much you open that door
the pressure will change, it's best when the door is open just as much as the window.
If you swing the door open the air just goes wherever..

now I know that this isn't exactly what's going on in the engine and anyone is welcome
to correct anything I said, but I just thought that it was a good explanation.

i hear its better to go with 2.5 inch pipe for a 2.4 or an eco. but no one has provided proof of this yet

The flow will only be as good as your weakest point, you need a header, bigger pipe, less restrictive cat and muffler, adding just a few of those items will not make much difference, you need to have the whole thing done from motor to bumper if you want maximum flow

your exhaust system is much like a nose, if you got boogies up in your brain it dont matter if you got a finger up your nose or not you cant breathe out

ok, i have 2.25 all the way back except where my o2 sensor is, right after the cat there is a section that is stock for about 5 inches or so until it hits my resonator. will this little section rob me of much horsepower?

yup i know where you mean and it sure will cause all that now faster moving flow from the head comes out and its stuffed up by the thin section
