First off just want to introduce myself. I've always been into RWD Chevy high performance muscle cars and have never owned any FWD car....that is until about a week ago when I bought a 95 Cavalier 4 door for $1150 at the local DWI auction. I bought it solely for my fiancee to drive since she doesn't have a car.
First things first, I noticed today on the transmission as seen from the front of the car, there is a 4 pronged receptacle on the same side of the transmission as the engine's exaust manifold. I also notice there is a 4 pronged plug just dangling from the wire loom nearby. I can only assume this plug goes here. Can anyone tell me what that electrical plug on the transmission goes to? Or what it does?
Next are rims and tires. Right now the car has the stock 14 inch rims with 195/70/R14 tires on it. I am considering installing some old school hammers or something on it but in order to do this I need to know what the lug pattern is on this car? Obviously it's a 5 lug but is it a 4 1/2 bolt spacing? Or is it a 4 3/4 bolt spacing?
Then for the audio system.....from what I have gathered the speakers in the doors are 4X6's while the rears are 6X9's. I was wondering if it is possible to install a pair of 6 1/2 in the 6X9 holes? I believe I've read somewhere someone makes an adapter plate to convert a 6X9 hole over to a 6 1/2 hole. Anyone know if this is so and where I could get one?
Finally....any maybe if money permits is performance. Since this car has 146k on the clock I've considered replacing the stock exaust with some headers and maybe some sort of cat back exaust, a chip and perhaps a cold air intake. I'd like to get a muffler that doesn't make the car sound like it's farting yet give the exaust a much better flow as compared to the stock OEM exaust. Any hopes or am I just wishful thinking?
Thanx in advance and I look foward to hearing from you soon.
Welcome!
As for the plug, I'm not sure. GM usually doesn't use the same style plug on two different things, so its pretty safe to assume that, although I would ask a service tech somewhere before just plugging things in.
As for the rims, the bolt pattern is 5x100. You can change that to inches if you want
You can probably install the 6.5's there if you make an adaptor plate.
You are in luck with the 95, since they are the only chippable 3rd gen J out there. I'm not sure if anybody makes one though, the only place that comes to mind is
http://www.mantapart.com. Please note, if you order from them, please order it C.O.D., they have problems shipping stuff in a timely matter when its paid for in advance.
As for the exhaust, you'll never get the V8 rumble out of a 4 cylinder engine. A decent size resonator will help quiet the exhaust down, or you can combine it with a cherry bomb. Magnaflow makes great mufflers.

Thanks for the quick response.
I drove the car around the block (I live in a subdivision) after I got it to finally crank over and run. It seems to run and drive good, brakes work good, everything seems to work...I just noticed the plug not plugged into the female connector on the transmissino but had no idea what it was for much less why it's not plugged up. The only thing I can think of is maybe it's for some type of lock up torque converter. The shift pattern is the standard P-R-N-D-2-1 so that also backs up my theory. Most cars made in the last 10 years have an overdrive automatic.
I've not ever heard of a 5X100 rim bolt pattern. What does that convert to in inches? I don't plan to use an adapter plate. When I go for rims I'm going to be looking for something that bolts right up to the existing studs and go from there.
For the chip I was going to see if Summit sells one since I have an account with those guys.
As for the exaust I don't plan on getting a V8 rumbly sound but I see alot of Neons and Cavaliers and Sunfires running around with fart cans on their cars and I don't want mine to sound like that. I want mine to either sound low and mellow or stock but definitley not so high pitched it sounds like the car has a mad case of the hershey squirts. I was thinking of using a Dynomax Ultraflow muffler since I know they're like one of the highest flowing mufflers on the market.
for the muffler problem- i know what you mean about the fart cans- i didn't want that sound either- i bought a magnaflow universal muffler- i sounds really nice- its a lower pitch than some of the tin cans runnin around out there- im happy with it-i just have stock exhaust to the muffler, but will get a cat back sometime this summer- and im sure it will sound much better after that too
basically any aftermarket exhaust you will get a fart sound... i think the flowmaster 60 series delta flow might be nice because the delta flow quiets down the fart noise and the 60 series is made for 4 cylinder engines..

ive experimented with many mufflers and exhaust set-ups in the past. best bet is a flowmaster 50 or 60 series. they are the least "4 cylinder" sounding mufflers, if ya know what i mean. magnaflow makes a very good quality muffler, however, everyone in your county will know youve got a 4 banger. not only do they deliver a very "fart can" sound...they are VERY loud when used without a resonator.

i have 6.5" speakers in the rear deck just took a thin poece of wood and cut the whole in that and screwed it to the rear deck but i wouldnt suggest that because it rattles way too much.

5x100mm
=
5x4 inches
just look for 5x100mm tho when looking for rims, i dont think they will have it converted to inches.

Thanks. Can anyone tell me how do I get the stock factory radio out? I've never had so much trouble ever getting one out. It's frustrating.

many old mopars had the 5x100 bolt pattern ! if you know about these old musle cars you should know this!
Sorry I don't know my Mopars that well. Same goes for Fords. I know my Chevys pretty well. Aside from that I thought Mopar used a 5 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern?
