96 2.2

Hey folks, beenlooking and reading and seen a few posts to swaping engines around for different perfomances. now i my question is alittle more mundane, i have a 96 cavalier 4 dr, bought it cheap, with 118K and rod knock, i dont mind rebuilding an engine as i got the car cheap enough and i can gather the parts as paychecks allow. i called around looking for a short block and all the yards ive called want 3-400$ with Unknown milage and that only 96 and 97 2.2 blocks will work. Ive also got a 90 cavalier with 2.2 and other then alt braket and MPFI the 96 looks about the same. ERW (engine rebuilders wharehouse) where i get my engine kits from shows Crank shaft, main and rod bearings being the same from mid 80-2002. this leads me to belivethe Coreblock is about the same.

What year 2.2 Blocks from donner cars will work using head and accesories i already have?

i have a line on a 98 missing a cam for 100$ will it work?.

ive done the head gasket on the 90 2.2 2x now and should be about the same on the 96, if the crank can be dropped easyly rebuilding in frame wouldnt be hard. anyone ever drop the crank with engine in car?

96-97 are the red headed step children, I believe the 95 is the oldest you could go, 1st problem is sensor location and size, 95 and earlier obd 1 96 later obdII, some differences there.

For the in frame rebuild, you will have to drop the tranny to get the crank out, would be easier to drop the motor and tranny from the bottom and just put it on an engine stand.

Hit 200 NA it broke once, Hit 213 it broke again,
Hitting 300 NA is further away than I thought.

problem is i have a chainfall, i can pick engine up push car back then lower provided the tranny doesnt need support. then lift engine, roll car under and put back in. i dont have a lift this is all done from my carport.

ok, what about the newest block? i got a friend who wrecked his 98 2.2 only 36K on it when he pulled the engine. will this block be ok to use with my 96 accesories, head, and plumbing?

to the best of my knowledge, 94-97 are all the same. in 98 things got moved around and sequential injection was added (this means cam sensor) i'd think you'd be able to use an older block with your current head.

94-97 2.2 engine blocks are drilled for differnet sensor holes compared to say the 87-93 and again from 89-2002 . Have i got that straight so far? but i can use the Crankshaft , rods, and pistons from say 87-2002 right? sensor triggers not withstanding.

the 96-97 is only block you can use because of the cam sensor, the 94-95 blocks were not drilled for the cam sensor and the 90-93 blocks were not drilled for the lifter guides, but you can interchange the crankshaft , main & rod bearings from 90-97 into your 96 block. hope this helps

ok, so block hunting is out of the Main running then, find a nice Donner crank to put in with some nice new pistons and rings, redo the head and all should be well.

thanks for your help
