First off, hello everyone. My name is Shirl. I have 2 cars: a 97' Z24 and a 96' Supercharged/nitroused Camaro. I love BOTH of them.
My 97' Z24 has 94,000 miles on it (2.4L motor) and it is my commuter car. I've been looking at an 02' LS Sport in bright yellow with 16,000 miles to purchase. I can probably get this car for about $9500 (with a trade of mine). I am torn between trading the car I love and getting the car I love (if that makes sense). I drove the 02' 2.2L and it was very close to mine in design, but I noticed it had less power than my 2.4L which had me a little concerned because I figured I'd have to add mods to it so that it at least equaled my 2.4L.
My questions are the following:
How reliable is the 2.2L ecotec motor? Have there been any recalls on anything?
What simple bolt-on performance parts are available for this car? Can I get it to equal my 2.4L with just an intake? (My 97' Z24 ran 15.6 (with some front tire spin) at the track).
Are there any improvements in the newer-body style models (03-up)?
and finally.... what's the average mileage you guys are seeing out of the 2.4L twin cam motor before it goes?

i have not heard any complaints on the eco yet. and no recalls that i know of

im thinking you might of drove a cav with a 2.2 ohv engine. which of course is not the eco. make sure you pop the hood and the engine says 2.2 ecotec on top
there are intakes, mounts, TB, headers, etc etc for the eco. the eco and 2.4 engine aint all that different in power numbers. the 2.4 has 150 hp and 155 tourqe. the eco has 140 hp and 150 of tourqe (i think). the numbers are some where around there anyway.

depending on how the motor is taken care of, it can last awhile. im at 86,000 miles myself.
just remember to pop that hood to make sure you are getting the Ecotec motor

so stock times maya r may not help

Actually, I'd like to keep the mods to a minimum because I need the car to commute in. That's why I was wondering about simple bolt-ons. I'm thinking maybe just an intake. I'd need to get it on-par power-wise with the 97' Z24. 99redz24, the 02' does have an Ecotec motor. I had to double check that and ask them to send a pic of the motor.

i know some 02s came with the eco. but they also came with the 2.2 ohv engine.
and the sent you a pic? heck, i can send you a pic of a V8 engine and say thats in my car. just look for yourself

well if it is infact a 2.2L eco then you should have no worries for power as they are very evenly matched, the eco is lighter and as far as I know better on gas.....there has been one recall and that was the computer modual or something but all that would have to be taken care of in order for the woner to sell it to you.

And there are plenty of bolt ons available and its a fairly new engine so there will be many more parts coming in the future, I know i am crossing my fingers!!!

Even fully equiped, I'm not sure the 3 year old cavy is worth $9500, specially if that is with your trade in. I am pretty sure doing intake and exhaust alone will put you even or above your 2.4.
eco is evenly matched with 'twin cam' IMO

I can assure you that they are not evenly matched. Which is why I'm asking about simple bolt-ons. Everything's a trade-off and in this case it would be trading a quicker car that I love with 94,000 miles for a real nice looking car that is slower but has a sunroof and cd player. This is a sucky decision to make because I'm only using these cars for commuting. I'm thinking of holding onto the 97' and trying to get the 02' for $10,000 (which is still probably too much to pay outright). But I don't think they are going to budge too much on the price because they originally wanted $11,990 and came down to $10,990. (It only has 15,900 miles and is mint except for a little 1" scratch that was touched-up on the rear bumper). Kelly Blue Book retail on the car (the price you should negotiate "from" with the dealer) is $10,500. I'll probably call the guy tomorrow and offer him $10,000 for it. Opinions on that?? sure about that? how much research/ knowledge you actually know about the 2.4 or the eco? not trying to be a dick, but when you say something like that it makes you look kind of dumb. just about everybody on this board knows the 2.4 and the Eco are pretty much even

These two cars that I am comparing are NOT evenly matched power-wise. My 2.4L is quicker by at least a half second which would equate to 5 carlengths. It ran 15.6 in the 1/4 with the front tires spinning, so I know it's a mid to low 15 second car. The 2.2L felt like a 16 second + car. I DO drag race my cars so I know them very well. Maybe I have a ringer, doesn't really matter. As I said, these are commuter cars for me. My race car is sitting in the garage with a blower and nitrous on it. Regardless, I'm looking for opinions on this PURCHASE not whether or not you feel that my assessment of the situation is accurate.
well $10'000 seems to high. I paid 11'900+ taxes CAN dollars and that was march 04 so a newer car at the time with 34'000 KM not sure how many miles that is.
it is a great car dont get me wrong but you would be spending more money then i did on the same car but a year older now and i am sure 15'000 miles is pretty close to 34'000km so they are comparable.
I would shop around, see what others have to offer and if the 10'000 seems average then go for it and you will be happy.
and about the eco vs. the 2.4 I have raced a 2.4 stock on stock and it was even untill about 3rd then I pulled ahead just slightly....(more then just once)
maybe it has more opions, like does the 2.4 you have now have a sunroof/powerwindows, that adds a lot of weight and is you 2.4 stick and the eco you drove auto, that would be a HUGE factor.

If you are looking for opinions on the purchase, then I'd look into buying one that's new. I've heard of people who have financed brand new eco's for right around 10,000 (or maybe even less) with rebates and deals that GM constantly offers. If you like the look of the 02 better than the 03+ models, then try to find one a little cheaper. I'm sure they are out there.
The other thing, make sure, BEFORE you commit to buy, that the engine is definately an eco motor. There are worlds of difference between the 2.2l ohv and the eco. You also mentioned that the eco has a sunroof...which does add a little weight. However, most people on this board will all agree that the Eco's 1/4 mile times are right on par with the LD9, and usually don't vary more than a few tenths (in either direction).
With the bolt ons, the Eco now has pretty much a complete line up of engine parts from different companies, so any bolt on you want, I'm sure you can find.
The one thing I'm wondering though is you said you drove the car...but had to have a pic of the engine sent to you? What was the deal on that? Just curious.

Hey guys, my car does not have a sunroof but it does have power everything.. the 02' has a sunroof and all options. Will, I drove out to see the car at least 2 1/2 hours away and I did look at everything including the motor. Funny thing is, when redz24 kept saying it probably wasn't the Ecotec, I couldn't remember... so I requested a few more pics through email. It's an Ecotec. One more question: does anyone know what they did to the Ecotec in the middle model Cobalt to get 170hp out of it??? Just wondering cuz that's another option for me to look at... thanks for the help.
They gave it more displacement. The ecotec in the last of the cavaliers is the 2.2l (as you know), which is also in the base Cobalt. In the mid level cobalt, the engine is a 2.4l eco, and everyone knows about the 2.0l supercharged eco in the SS supercharged coupe.
There was some info in the other cars forum about the SS (non-sc), and from what I remember right, that particular trim and engine wasn't supposed to be out until next year.
Although hell...I'm not really up on the cobalt stuff...so I could be mistaken. I know for a fact it's not out right now though.
