new to jbodies, need some help

hello all,

my g/f just picked up a 1995 Sunfire. its pink, main reason why she wanted it lol. it was cheap at $1k but has 205k miles. body in great shape, has some minor surface rust. engine and trans seem to be operational and functioning. motor runs great, said it has a recent tune up, new head gasket, new wp, etc. needs a new exhaust gasket, rear strut is making noise, front struts are probably needed, needs new rear tires, and new brakes, wipers work but stop in the up position. my questions:

1) he said the motor and trans are original and its mostly highway miles. motor runs beautiful, how much longer you think the trans will last? havent driven it that much yet but so far the trans seems fine and the fluid looks good. i cant believe its the original trans but hes the original owner so...

2) how do i fix the wipers from staying up? i read somewhere that its a spring on the motor that needs to be replaced. i am gonna rip the cowl off and see if i can figure it out, anyone know what i need exactly?

3) right rear strut is loud as hell. im thinking strut mount, murrays has the strut mount for $44, the strut is another $40. question is how can i tell which one is bad? i looked at the strut and tried to move it when the tire was off the ground and it seemed fine. im gonna look in the trunk to see if i can tell. i dont want to replace both.

so far i have bought new pads and rotors, battery holddown, exhaust donut, oil change, seat covers, chrome hub caps, etc. about $140 worth of stuff. i still need to fix the rear strut. my biggest thing is i want this car to be a good transportation for my g/f and not have her stuck on the side of the road. if you guys could point me to problem areas or things i should replace before i hand the car over to her i would greatly appreciate it. thanks for reading my book

1) i dont think there really is a way of telling until it happens. my trans just went on me when i was driving. it was working fine all day, then i make a right turn and i heard a pop and i had trouble turning my car to the right and i had a lot of trans parts fall out of the trans. it was drivable but very annoying

2) cant help you on that one

3) well if you drive it, does the car bounce in the rear? thats a good way to tell if the strut is bad or not.

that all depends on how well it was taken care of before and how its taken care of now. it can last 200,000 more miles or crap out on your gf tommorow

not sure on that either. but if it is the mount. youm ight as well replace them all because if one is bad then the others are going bad as well or are already bad

well has anyone else gotten this many miles on the auto trans? how many miles do they typically last?

i dont have almost $200 to replace strut mounts that dont need replacing. ill replace them as they go.

oh also is it a bad idea to get one of the cheap cold air kits on ebay like this one:

i dont want to put much money into modding her car but for the price and looks, i think it would be nice.

2 dunno

3 if its not bouncy its the mount.. get under there and have someone bounce on the car see where its comming from

not to be a ass about it, but am i not saying that right? people have gotten over 250,000 miles on this very same engine and tranny and more. but take care of it and the car will last. beat the crap out of it and it will crap out on you.

far as the intake goes, lots of people buy intakes from Ebay. there is no difference from the you you linked to or AEM or Injen. just a pipe with a filter on the end

My transmission went at about 80,000 miles. Was going bad when I got it though just drove it until it went and then replaced it. So it really depends is my guess.

cool thanks guys, i found out last night that the left front strut is gone, car nose dives on that side bad when you hit the brakes. so looks like i need new front struts like i suspected and a rear strut mount. so for just over $300 this car is gonna be driveable. lets hope the transmission holds up for a while. im also thinking the lifters are bad, the motor makes a ticking/knocking noise after it warms up. im hoping its just an exhaust leak but i dont know. also the heat isnt working, dont know why i didnt check that, a/c works but needs recharging. i guess you get what you pay for, but my g/f just had to have it lol, its pink! oh well, i like working on cars so its cool i guess.
