Just buy a new radio. Snag the new Alpine and you will be all set. But to keep factory head unit, upgrade your inside speakers and put some watts to them too.
I've always believed the 1st thing that should be done to improve the factory stereo system is to replace the original speakers. And if you do end up changing the head unit you can just get the plug in adapter harness to wire the new one to and toss the oem radio in a closet. That way if you sell the car you can dig the factory head unit out of the closet, unplug the aftermarket one and plug the original back in. It's no big deal really.

There it is right there! 2 12" woofers aren't going to sound good. Just OBNOXIOUSLY loud.

yea man, alot of factory speakers use paper cones, which will easily blow out with an aftermarket amp. I think most people usually upgrade the interior speakers first anyway.

thats what i did, replaced factory speakers with polk audio powered by an alpine v12. its louder and clearer.
also try to stop any ratteling, it makes a big difference in sound quality.
On the devise that lets you have an amp and subs. (AKA Inverter) A wire to RCA converter, there are set screws to adjust the amount of voltage that flows into the RCA cables. TURN IT DOWN then you can adjust the amp accordantly.

If you want lots of bass, and still want to hear everything else, then get a after-market head unit or another amp with after-market speakers.
Sub Amp--->Turn the amp to low pass. turn all nobs down to lowest level like 40-50Hz. Then turn it up till you like it. I personally can not stand any rattling, and when people have subs that are distorting and bottoming out, that drives me crazy.

Loud doesn't mean quality. But quality can be load.

don't put bass on the head unit and you'll hear it good. I have 2 12" with the oem speaker and it's all ok. tune it like it's suppose to be and you won't have problem. don't put any bass on you radio and the sub will do the job.

you can have your factory stereo and speakers wired up to an amp. Mine was like that for a week casue the shop wasn't able to do my whole system at once. My factory speakers sounded good and the head unit sounded good too. Although the speakers probably wouldn't last too long with the amp I have.

Adjust the gain on the amp. I still use my stock radio and set the bass level to 0, tehn adjusted my amp so the bass sounded good. Then Im still able to adjust my radio from -7 to +7 for bass to tune it for diffent songs.

cheap crap= cheap sound
simple as that also..
but def.. upgrade interior speakers.. I love my polks everything in my car is polk. from subs, to amp, speakers and a killer kenwood

but I agree with what most everyone says with a few exceptions but to each thier own..
Id personally use 3 amps. but thats me, cuz I like ALLOT of bass.. works great because I'm like almost deaf and I don't have to listen to my girl nag all the time he he..

Crack is like a hand puppet.. play with it enough it will make you go crazy.
