2002 cavalier, daily driver

OK, after a few searches and a lot of reading I have decided to post my question:

I have a 2002 Cavalier, nothing special, that I drive to work every day, 45-50 minute commute or so. I would like a bit of a performance increase, but I dont want to sacrifice reliability or fuel economy. Is this even possible? or will I always be giving up something to gain the performance?

Thanks for the answers guys.

Is a 5-7 hp difference noticable? For example if I go to pass someone on the interstate and hit it, will 5-7 give me a difference I can feel?
