I have a loose lumber noise in the back of my 97 cavalier. I bought the car used, and its been there since day one. I thought it would go away when we put air ride on the car, but it didn't. We don't have many original suspension parts left. Does anyone else, have this problem, and have corrected it? Please help!all
anything loose in the spare tire well? I have a similar noise, and I think it might be my upper strut mount in the rear. But I haven't been able to check it yet.
nope, nothing loose in the spare tire hole, its not even there anymore. All my valves for my air ride are mounted there. I did a search on yahoo once, and found a website that said it was a factory defect in certain year model cars. But since all the air ride, they said I could not use the upper strut mount replacement parts. I was wondering if someone had defeated it another way, it is truly ANNOYING!
Some 1996 and 1997 model year J-body cars had this sound. It came from a bad strut mount on the rear suspension. GM has issued a technical service bulletin on this issue. If your car is experiencing this problem, GM will replace those parts under warranty

thanks, i will check into that today.
well just because you have air ride doesnt mean all the suspension is not original. check the cv joints

The cv axles are good. Everything has been checked, I called the Chevy dealer and they said it was a issue with the technical service bulletin. That the upper strut mounts were bad, and they came from the factory like that. Once I replace them with the revised version no more noise.
oh, and just to say cv axles are on the front, and the noise is coming from the rear. hmmmm
