questions about paint jobs...
Thursday, May 26, 2005 8:40 PM
Hi all, just wondering what steps are involved in painting a new or relatively new vehicle that has no body damage and good paint still... The reason I'm asking is I'm thinking of getting part of my 'victory red' sunfire painted a gloss black. I'm thinking of a two tone (upper black, lower red) so I'll keep the red and just have the top painted black..

How much should this cost me?

Thanks

Personally you should've bought a car that is black there is no good reason to waist a perfectly good paintjob IMO. If you want a factory black it would be around Im guessing depending who you goto 1200 for a decent paint shop and dealer 3000 or so. But those are just guess's. Remember they'll hafta dissaemble alot of your car to get everything painted correctly including mabey but not always, lifting the engine, or panels.

basically the steps are going to a body shop and having them do it, unless you know what your doing, you shouldn't attempt painting your car, you'll just screw it up. Basically the steps would be first to tape off the line where you want the paint to start, make it even on both sides, start sanding your clearcoat, do the body work (theres ALWAYS bodywork doesn't matter how new) then clean everything up, tape up the windows, lower half, wheels, etc. and then finally spray the base/clear.

but you can't just clear the part you painted... you have to reclear the WHOLE car...

shops vary in prices...
