Brake pads are my first guess. Was it more like a screeeeeccchhh!!! and does it do it all the time, or just that once?

I agree. It sounds like it could be the start of the wear indicators.
There's a piece of metal on the pads, and when the pads get low this piece of metal starts to hit the rotor. Which makes a sound when braking to let the driver know it's time to change them.

the only thing that will do like a whistle is the brake pedal and it's NORMAL.

its your back lifting mechanism on your reserve lock out dampener the o-ring on it gets worn then the bearing gets un lubricated and fails.

my brake pedal produces a hissing sound (which can be like whistling ). This is caused by the pedal going down and air gushing into the chamber for the power brake.
There is actually a foam filter covering the hole where the pushrod from the brake pedal moves in and out of the power brake.
