Which tranny in what year?

I figured this would be a newbie question, so here it is.

I'm doing a 2.4 swap from the 2200. I've got an 02 and I'm swapping in a 97 LD9. I'm getting the engine from a friend's car (Sunfire GT) and he said I can have the tranny with it if I want. My question is this- is 97 still the dreaded Isuzu tranny, or did they have the Getrag in by then? I have plenty of money since I was saving up to buy the engine and tranny when I got this one thrown in my lap, so I want to know if I'll still need to buy the tranny, or if that 97 one will work. Thanks in advance, y'all.

First year of the Getrag was 2000.

Check your local laws, it may be illegal to swap in the 1997 engine into your 2002 car. Some states require that the engine be no older then the car that it is going into

Thanks for the heads-up man, but I'm not terribly worried about that. It's the same model engine that was available the year my car was made, so it would be extremely difficult for them to check that.

There were some changes done to the LD9 for the 99.5 model year, such as lack of an EGR, so a mechanic that know's what he's looking for will know that the engine is the wrong year.

Really? Good to know. I still don't think the issue will ever come up- I do all of my own work. I'm still new to J-bodies though. I'll look into that. Just out of curiosity, what all are the differences?

It's been a while, so I don't remember all of them. I know there is no EGR which requires a different PCM, I believe that there is a lip, or lack of a lip (can't remember exactly which), in the Intake Manifold, where the TB mounts. I've had too much Mopar V-8s and fixing HMMWVs come up since I sold my Sunfire.
