Ecotec swap out in a 2001 Base?
Wednesday, July 06, 2005 2:17 PM
Now this isn't something I plan to do soon, I just had some questions.

I've got a Base 2001 coupe with that @!#$ty 2.2L OHV I-4 and was wondering if anyone had swapped out theirs for an Ecotec and if they had, what was required? Thanks!

WOW! You mean in order to swap out an engine, I need to HAVE an engine!! Geeze...

I'm talking about things like motor mounts and whatever else is involved with getting it to go in the engine bay.

Since you were being a smart ass to somebody that was attempting to help you, I will also.

USE THE FRIGGEN SEARCH BUTTON!!!!!

There has been a few people to do ecotec swap. Do you know how many people come on here with "I plan to do (insert some BS here).", and it never gets done?

I probably could help you if you would have filled your registry out. There are other factors beside "motor mounts and whatever else". What tranny do you have? 5sp or auto? You wanting to remain auto/5sp or swap to the other?

Before you rip somebody that is trying to help with senseless sarcasm, you need to do your homework....Damn noob. Yea, that is the only thing in your registry:

If you were joking then I apologize, you might want to make it clear the next time you do.

You realize 99redz24 was being a smartass, too, right? I was just playing along. I mean really, someone asks what they need for an engine swap and someone replies with "You need an engine and tranny, among other things."

And I've got a 5-spd, and I definitely want to keep it.

I have major problem here. Why was this moved to the newbie forum??? This was fine in the performance forum. I swear these mods around here!

I moved it because there are a hundred posts like this in the performance forum, and those who are new may search the newbies forum first. I moved it so that somebody may find it later, and it wasn't adding any value to the performance forum. This post could be entirely bypassed through a search, there is even an entire write up on the swap somewhere in the performance forum, written by StreetRacin22 or somethin like that.

Blargh, nothing like asking a question and getting yelled at. But, I don't have 24,000 posts here like I do at Gamespot.com, so I guess its understandable.

No hard feelings, though.

Thing is the ecotec swap is still new, and people are still finding things out. See a lot of older timers ( like myself ) do not come in the newbie forum, and the newbies could be losing info to help them. I do not think there is no where near 100 post on the ecotec swap, at least no 100 with good info on it. Yes a search could have kept a post from being made, but then why have a forum. How about no one can post anything, just search all the old post.

Well i have 2 05 ECOs from the cobalts sitting in my garage, with ZERO miles. I found out that if i wanted to do the swap, i would need motor, tranny, computer, harness, mounts., and front axles which are damn expensive i might add. beyond that, not too much, i think you may have to adjust the firewall or radiator, cant remember. Hardest part would be to wire it up and make the cradle to make it fit. A lot of fabrication to make it fit. but it can be done. Im looking to get sponsored by HP tuners here soon to help me with the motor swap if i try to do it. I doubt i will but never know. Im not going to say im going to just like everyone else does and then stops. Good luck if you do.

You don't have to move the firewall or radiator.

There is no cradle, the Eco uses the same lower mount as the 2.2 OHV, 2200, and 2.4L, the upper mount is different, but is bolt on. The toughest part of the whole swap is if you change trannies, to weld a new mount in on the frame rail.

BTW, ecotec radiator is different. Hose locations.

Instead of screwing with wiring, just rip the old one out (body and engine bay) and replace it with a 03 and higher. That way your on the safe side.

If i were doing it correctly, i would build a cradle for the engine, not much more pwere but if you go race ready then it would be easier. I knew there was something with the radiator, i just didnt think there was enough room in there since the TB is in the front
