A buddy is having trouble with his 3rd gen 97' Cavalier z24
He said when he turns the key, the car runs for 5 seconds; the headlights flash and it shuts off. Than the THEFT lights up on the dash. Does anyone know what the problem is? We pulled the shroud off the steering column and there dosnt seem to be any loose wires.
did you recently change the battery or batery cables? there is a ground that runs from the + wire and grounds on the battery holder plate thing, may be the prob.
Try starting it again and let it stall. The theft light should start blinking then. If so, let sit as it is, with ignition on, car off for about 10-15min until the light stops blinking. This should relearn the theft system and you should be good to go then.

What do you mean by "relearn theft pattern" ??
Are the keys programmed in these cars? Could the key have gone bad mabye? Been demagnetized or something. The stock radio is out and a basic cd player is in replacement if that matters at all. We tried waiting 10 min and nothing at all, just went back to where it was at before.
Can someone send a link to a overview of the ignition system
It's not the key, if anything it should be the ignition in correspondence with the computer. Let run this by someone at work and see what they say on a second opinion. Cause thats how we usually handle a situation like that on some of the cars at work. Might be different security setup.
