Ok, its been a while since I posted on here. here i go...
I have an old car, 98 cavalier sedan with auto tranny. it was my first car. instead of selling it for close to nothing, should i turn it into a rally car? I always fancied driving a rally car through dirt and gravel, climbing mountains and getting big air. I have been researching cavaliers that have been turned into rally cars but i cant seem to find any, so this would be the first, to my knowledge.
would it be too much of a pain in the ass... should i just opt for the 99 subaru 2.5 rs for this project?
any imput would be helpfull!

Since you already have the cavalier why don't you check out a league called "ucar"
It stands for you can aford racing, I didn't come up with the name I know its lame.
Anyway its not rally racing that you like but you may want to check it out any how. Think
of it as nascar with small front wheel drive cars. Its alot cheeper then I've heard rally racing to be. But if you do decide to rally I'd say the Subaru would be a better bet with the all wheel drive.

I know a couple cavies are being used to race dirt tracks. Im planning on that in the near future.

I think thats the ucar league I was talking about 2nr. Are all the cars out there amall front wheel drives ok some are rear wheel but there all 4 bangers with no turbos allowed. If so one of the guys at work runs a horizon or omni and says its a blast.

They have all kinds of classes, but the 4 banger FWD no Boost completely stock class, is the stinger.

If your going rally, you need to do a bit of research. There is a magizine called grassroot motorsports. And check out their website. I consider them one of the best palces for info on auto X and rally.
Your gonna need to decide on Stock class, Modified, and FI classes.

down there stinger but it looks like the same thing just different name. So you'll be wheeling one of these littke terrors around a race track? Have fun, I'd love to do it too

Yeah I went and watched a couple of races....they're more for the straight line gets old drivers.

^^also like to add that that cavy wins ALOT so going in circles is more about driver than car.

^^^Hehe....not racing yet so im not winning anything in fact the best I could do at the strip was a 10.8XX in the 1/8th. I should be racing there by summer next year. If things go accordingly.

wow. i didnt know i would get so many replies. yeah the blue "stinger" cavalier doesnt fit with the rest of the gang. I'll check out that magazing, if i can find it. I have done research on rallying. I know all pro cars are stitch welded and have the insane roll cage.... and theree are different classes with restrictions on engine size and what not... and fuel cells.

Not preposterous at all. If you have the option of using a Scooby, I'd go that route- but if you're just looking to have fun modding your car and testing its limits, then a Cav can certainly run ralley.
It'll be alot of work, but there are ralley leagues that run those cars. I don't know where you live, and I'm too lazy to check right now, but there aren't many of them in the U.S. It's really huge in Europe though. Where do you think the WRC guys get their start?
I say go for it. Keep us updated on your progress.
Just a tip- BIGGER BRAKES, steel lines on EVERYTHING, and remember the line between drift and wreck is pretty damn thin.

If your trying to build a rally car on a budget. Alot of the team use old 1g (90-94) Eagle Talon TSi AWD or Eclipse GSX's.
